Incisive social commentary from our revered leader David Cameron: "these people who were nicking televisions were not complaining about the reform of the education maintenance allowance or tuition fees. They were nicking televisions because they wanted a television and they weren’t prepared to save up and get it like normal people" Thanks for that Dave. Not only have socio-economic conditions got nothing whatsoever to do with widespread disaffection and rioting, but the rioters are sub-human. Good job:2thumbsup:
If a normal person is someone of Cameron's ilk, I'd be flattered to be excluded from that particular category.
Cameron should realise that when he states 'Normality' - his vision of such is not on the same wave of reality of the people within the country he is supposed to be 'Leading' and not 'Bossing' Big Society? - Well look where that has gotten you! Too many cuts, Too little provision of service = The Community Spirit or Vigilantism (chose your preference) taking back the streets Never has the line "You don't know what you're doing" rang so true Reaping what has been sown does have consequences
Id have to agree that normal people wouldnt be nicking televisions :leaving: a normal person just buys one...or if the normal person is poor they just dont buy one and use whatever one they have until it breaks or buy a used one or wait until a normal richer person buys a new one they didnt really need and puts the older working one at the road for the garbage truck
Commentary that isn't necessarily what he really thinks but more likely an attempt to characterize the protest in a manner that will discourage people from participating... by painting every dissenter with the broad brush of lawless looter. "Stay home folks, nothing to see here..."
Yes that's what Cameron was getting at, what I was getting at though was his characterisation of those people who took part in the rioting as belonging to an abnormal sub-group. The behaviour may not be normal, but to claim that these people are not normal is another thing. This demonstrates dangerous unconscious essentialist assumptions and is an attempt to paint an entire underclass as somehow sub-human. When the leader of a democracy says things like this it should set alarm bells ringing for any thinking person...
Left-handed people aren't "normal" people according to the dictionary. But I wouldn't say that means they are sub-human (although obviously they are)
maybe he didn't see this interview then: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HjWifAuTwJg"]https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HjWifAuTwJg
I really hate Sky news. I've only watched a few segments from them (don't really watch news or tv at all) and seems as bad as the reputation Fox has. Framing every bit of factual information in their own interpretation is just not journalism.
I don't think anyone would characterise left handed people as 'abnormal' unless the intention was to demonise them as a group...
I just meant they are in the minority, and therefore are not the norm, i.e. norm-al. I'm just saying that "sub-human" is not an antonym for "normal". (Ooh look at me with the big words!)
by normal everyday standards - you can acquire goods from a shop by paying in a currency. this is pretty normal walking into a store and taking something without paying deviates from this normality.
