In the 60's/70's, he was as big as anybody except maybe the Beatles, yet just as influential. He even influenced them, as well as being influnced by them. He's so versatile that I didn't even know what subcategory to put him under. I only picked folk because that's where he started, and was the first to step out of traditional folk to fuse it with other styles and sounds. It just puzzles me that most of my generation has never even heard of him or even his music. Even people of his generation won't seem to remember him until I bring him up. I have him on the same pedestal as the Beatles and Led Zeppelin. Why doesn't anybody else?
That banana peels gets people fucked up though, some never recover from a bad trip. Atlantis is an excellent tune when your chilling smoking banana peels with goodfellas in your life.. [ame]https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9AUEjzVQwKo
He seems to be underrated because he rose to prominence in the shadow of Bob Dylan's early to mid sixties rise to fame. Even though Donovan was a huge fan of Bob's, Bob stole a lot of his shine. Bob did the same thing for A LOT of folk singers around that time. I think he is a great folk singer. Solid guitar, good vocal alignment. He isn't AS underrated as you might think, but I agree in part. People don't talk about him like they should
Didn't know he was. How many albums has he released? No-one can touch Richard Thompson from that era IMO though- [ame]https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AxKTzwaEa2o [ame]https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EC-5vpJNlUk [ame]https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NMkPHQrO-uI
I agree tho seems as if its good music lost in history I dig it but dont seem to know too many ppl that have even heard it
You know, I really liked listening to Donovan and Simon & Garfunkel in the past but since I've known Nick Drake, who completely blew my mind if this is the right expression for that kind of music, Donovan's voice sometimes really makes me mad. Even S&G sometimes are "too much" for me. Too unsettled. I mean, don't get me wrong, I still like them - songs like Catch The Wind, The Light, Lady Of The Stars; The Boxer, Old Friends Bookends Theme or Scarborough Fair, which I think is a truly masterpiece. Just some probably not really well chosen examples. Ok, I forgot what I wanted to get at. ^.^ Peace and Love
I don't think Donovan's so underrated. All the peeps who are into psychy folk generally know and dig him. It's been a while since his heyday, some people nowadays don't know or like the Beatles music, does that make them underrated? Davey Graham can :2thumbsup:

No arguing he has awesome skills but I like his work with Fairport Convention a 1000 times better then his solo stuff.
