The fact that anyone should have to pay to go anywhere sickens me.

Agreed- its harsh and just takes the piss really.. whats more amazing is how many people just swallow it and pay!

Paying is like giving an offering.. Prayers cant cover the cost of park maintenance.. Either that or local taxes go up, they dont want that and could begin to encroach upon the land to cover expenses .. Turn your own backyard into the woods and forest / Stop widespread developments and keep people in the areas they have already used, scavenged and destroyed..

what about the people who cannot afford the fees?

I refuse to pay on many grounds of ethics until its free for all and we as humans take responsibilty instead of paying someone else to do it!

Thats just a poor agrument from the wealthly, I have seen families not able to afford to take their children away this summer because they cannot afford to camp and dont want to free camp from fear of the ranger. It truely is sad, still they have the electronic babysitter and are burning fuel with there air cons on! Governments know exactly what they are doing..

if you have nothing illegal on you,. whats the ranger gonna do? Tell you to leave or go to camping site..

why would camp illegal anyways in a protected park.. your not a bear, you are a human being., you belong with other human beings so all the trash is kept together and less damage is done to the park.

here you are in the non-designate area., get attacked by a cougar, a bear and the next thing you know. Hunters are out there killing the animals.. Great for park publicity.. great for the animals houses you just trespassed into..

I used to work at a public campground as a campground host. Man, you have no idea how tough it is to take care of one!

    • There are those that come there and think that the campground host is there to cater to them.
    • Then there are those that think the host's personal stuff (travel trailer included) is public access.
    • Then there are those that are too lazy to pick up their litter.
    • Then there are those that use the vaulted toilets as garbage cans.
    • Then there are those that feel it's ok to tear up a picnic table & use it as firewood.
    • Then there are those that feel it's ok to camp and not pay the fee.
    • And finally there are those that think that all campgrounds are funded by tax dollars.

    Well, they aren't.

If you want to throw up a tarp and camp in the wild, fine. Have at it.
If you want an improved campsite with a table and vaulted toilets and nice graveled (or paved) road, then pay the damn fee. It wasn't free to put in, it's not free to maintain & take care of, it sure as hell ain't gonna be free for your use.

If you want free camping there's plenty of places to do it at. Ya just gotta look.

National and State Parks wouldn't need money if they would just let nature reclaim them. I always found it odd that an institution whose objective is to preserve nature goes out of it's way to put lodges, pavillions, electricity, cabins, plumbing and sewage, neatly manicured campgrounds, rv hookups and paved roads in national parks. I think if they were left wild, less idiots would be inclined to go to national parks and spread their litter and bullshit around. I hate being told where to camp - when I go camping, I don't want to be surrounded by tents on some lawn - I can go to a festival for that. It's getting increasingly difficult to find places to really "camp" on public lands. If you want to camp KOA style you're going to have to pay - since they insist on offering that kind of camping in national and state parks, why should it be any different. The only thing I don't mind paying for is to employ park rangers to keep an eye on the idiots who litter and do other dumb shit.

Losing faith in humanity... wait, wait, remember Primal, you're on a website, most people here are products of the technology age. "Humans are supposed to direct and box up Nature, FOR WE ARE ALMIGHTY HUMANS, RULERS OF THE UNIVERSE!!!!!"

I am in 100% agreement with this post, tho I still feel people should police their own lands or pay someone they feel has the time dedication and connection to the spirit of the place out of the massive taxes already being squeezed out of us all...

Yes, National/State parks need money for upkeep, vets, and personal I doubt it can all be handled by taxes.

    .....
The land did well enough without us taming it in the first place, dont get me wrong we face simular problems in the UK but you do not have to pay to walk in forests or on beachs or sacred rock mounds (apart from
Stonehenge) which we do have the 2 solstices it is free altho heavy policed.

We are off soon to the beachs of california for the last of our trip and to camp as a tent is between $35 and $41 without taxes inc- lucky for us we have a car and I dont mind being busted by the rangers as I quite like the challenge when it happens they learn something ... I have only been busted once for sleeping in the wrong place, he was cool and just asked us to move on and the cop was a sweetheart! :2thumbsup: tho in just 2 months Ive had to deal with 3 cops ... its been interesting and I can safely say its time to wake up America you are stunning and I am grateful for the lessons we have learnt here- only time I will return is to stay in a community at wounded knee other than that I have made peace with my own land in my heart and am grateful for being a British citizen .....

see you on the flip side

Someone has to pay for them. It might as well be the people you use them.

National Parks used to be free.

    The Reagan Administration changed that.

National Parks are America's gift to it's citizens. They should be free.
