Hello! My partner translates ancient Greek astrological texts and is currently working on a translation of Vettius Valens' "Anthology". Her first translation "An Introduction to the Tetrabiblos of Ptolemy, by Porphyry or Tyre" was well received and innovative in the sense that the concepts are translated in such a way that anyone with an interest in ancient astrology, could understand the concepts presented. I've been helping out with some editing on the new work in progress and LOVE that the concepts and techniques are understandable and accessible. I am curious to this communities about opinions on "accuracy" vs "readability". Would you rather read an ancient text that is more "word for word" accurate but heady and complicated, or a text that may not be a "word for word" translation but make the concepts and techniques, accessible and usable to the average Joe interested in astrology? Thoughts?
I think I know who your partner is. Personally I think readability with footnotes for any deviations is better. I look forward to it. I've never read Valens, and Schmidt makes me itch.
