My triplet granddaughters, almost 5 years old, are half Puerto Rican and half Caucasion. They have mostly Spanish speaking Aunts and Uncles on their mother's side. I'm not sure they get much more of their Puerto Rican heritage than some of the food their mother prepares. They aren't bilingual; even their 9 year old half-sister isn't and she's full blooded Puerto Rican. When I first met her and she was 3 years old, she spoke only Spanish and her mother told me that she was going to raise her to be bilingual. I guess being schooled here (suburban Atlanta) made it easier not to pursue that because she speaks no Spanish now. I think her mother was actually afraid of her not fitting in with the Caucasian kids and being ostracised. Her Puerto Rican cousins, are being raised in Orlando, within a community where there is a higher concentration of Puerto Ricans, and have two Puerto Rican parents who connect more strongly with their heritage than my daughter-in-law does. There seems to be more of a Puerto Rican pride within the adults even though most of them have never lived on the island or left at a very young age. I think the little kids don't understand or care.
Im half black half white and my grandparents are from italy. But ive really never identifyed myself with any race. I kinda just feel like a person. haha But i look more white im just naturally tan.
I'm half mutant gene and half Irish/Polish/Creek Indian, in others works I'm just a red headed cracker.
While I’m of mixed race afro-portuguese creole I identify myself as an african-american and wouldn’t have it any other way. :2thumbsup: h
Early humans banging neandrathals is what saved us from dying out. http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/science-environment-14673047 Remember Fitzy: Bang everything you can. For humanity.
I would see the Chinese Ginger as the epitome of multiculturalism. I like living in a mixed race world, some day nobody will care about race because we'll all be mixed. A blonde Indian (from India). A four-legged Scotsman. Eugenics for everyone!
I’m in the same boat but prefer identifying with my dominant side which features Public Enemy The Million Man March, The Fab Five, The LA Riots, Jesse Jackson, The honorable minister Louis Farrakhan, O.J. Simpson, Reparations, Al Sharpton, Rev. Jeremiah Wright, and The Prez :2thumbsup: Hotwater
Hahaha everyone says i act "white" Whatever that means. But i think its just cause im not in to any new rap or really any pop music for that matter. Hahah also not being able to jump high run fast and i do think my lack of rythem has something to do with it too But its wierd that i act more "white" ,because the family i live with is all black. And when i was growing up all my friends were too. But i really dont believe there a role to being a certin race. A persons a person.
This is a really interesting topic to me Having multiple heritages (German, European, Pokagon and a whole lotta' others) kinda makes it hard for me to identify with just one. I kinda' explore and see what there is to see, so I guess it's good in that sense. But it would be pretty cool to be "traditional" with my heritage (assuming I had just one, like say Pokagon) and practice my cultural roots. My friend who is 50% Cherokee 50% Caucasian is VERY much into her native american heritage and some of the things she practices is simply amazing to witness. (Not to mention she knows how to do a whole lotta' sweet ass crafts!)
I find it interesting that no one considers the average white American to be of mixed race, though most of us are mutts. To the generation of my grandparents and (especially) great-grandparents, a German plus a Frenchman was a mixed marriage. My ancestors came from at least four Western European countries, but no one looks at me and thinks "mixed race person". And nobody taught me anything about the cultural heritage of those countries. It seems that the term "mixed race" has become limited to only a limited number of races.
Among my blood ancestors, there are English, Irish, Scottish, French, and Swiss, who were Caucasians. What defines a "Race"? How many "Races" are there?
the distinctions between race and ethnicity are not simple. and what is white exactly? in the end it doesnt say much.
There is so much to consider when you try to decide if you are speaking of race, ethnicity, or just what. I found the table below: Biological definitions of race (Long & Kittles 2003) Concept Reference Definition Essentialist Hooton (1926) "A great division of mankind, characterized as a group by the sharing of a certain combination of features, which have been derived from their common descent, and constitute a vague physical background, usually more or less obscured by individual variations, and realized best in a composite picture." Taxonomic Mayr (1969) "A subspecies is an aggregate of phenotypically similar populations of a species, inhabiting a geographic subdivision of the range of a species, and differing taxonomically from other populations of the species." Population Dobzhansky (1970) "Races are genetically distinct Mendelian populations. They are neither individuals nor particular genotypes, they consist of individuals who differ genetically among themselves." Lineage Templeton (1998) "A subspecies (race) is a distinct evolutionary lineage within a species. This definition requires that a subspecies be genetically differentiated due to barriers to genetic exchange that have persisted for long periods of time; that is, the subspecies must have historical continuity in addition to current genetic differentiation." Population genetic correlation structure Edwards (2003) "most of the information that distinguishes populations is hidden in the correlation structure of the data and not simply in the variation of the individual factors."
yeah i had this conversation just today with my friend actually. I wish i was mixed race, just SOMETHING so my skin isnt soooo white, and hair a mousy brown ugh! So yeah, mix races are sexy.. and i wish i was mixed race
