I saw Hair during its first run in Boston. Did any of you see any of these musicals on stage back in the day?
Jesus Christ Superstar was first recorded and released in the form of a rock-opera concept-album in the USA in May 1971.It became a musical by Andrew Lloyd Webber with lyrics by Tim Rice, and was first staged on Broadway in October 1971. The musical was based very loosely on the Gospels' account of the last week of Jesus' life, beginning with the preparation for the arrival of Jesus and his disciples in Jerusalem, and ending with His crucifixion. A film adaptation of Jesus Christ Superstar was released in 1973, and was the eighth highest-grossing film of that year.-Ron Price with thanks to Wikipedia, 3 September 2011. I was about to fly to Australia back then in mid-1971 and by the time the musical appeared on Broadway I was ensconced in a primary-school classroom in a semi-arid dog-biscuit city in South Australia….But when the film was released in 1971: I was teaching high-school….A LSA was formed in Whyalla, a port city in the Eyre Peninsula; the only LSA outside a capital city in the west and centre of Australia: mirabile dictu……..1 Jesus Christ Superstar went on to be performed again & again and it’s still bringing in crowds.2 The Baha’i Faith in Australia went on to be expanded again & again: it’s starting to bring in the crowds.3 1 Latin phrase meaning ‘marvellous to relate’; LSA=local spiritual assembly 2 Go to this link for the latest crowd: http://theater.nytimes.com/2011/08/...ot-at-stratford.html?ref=theater&pagewanted=2 3 There were 3000(circa) Baha’is in Australia in 1971 and in 2011 17,000(circa). And I’m still living Downunder. Ron Price 3 September 2011
Funny/interesting bit of trivia. Ron Jeremy had a non-credited part in Jesus Christ Superstar. Unfortunately I couldn't find it on youtube. Stay Brown, Rev J
I saw Godspell and JC Superstar back in the day, but I was too young (to get into) see Hair and Oh Calcutta
I saw Godspell in Boston. The memory is vague though, I think I had a bad seat. The movie made a stronger impression. I really loved some of those songs. On the Willows and Where are You Going? were my favorites.
I saw Hair when it came to st louis, mo in 1969. I remember well...outside the theatre all these church buses pulled up and people got out of them with signs protesting it. The cops had to put up barriers to protect the people waiting in line to get into the theatre! Those f%#kers were full of hate man! Inside the theatre, while waiting for it to begin, we watched some of the performers sitting a circle chanting. As the theatre lights lowered, performers came from the back of the theatre toward the stage in slow motion(for real!) as the beginning of the music to Aquarius began....it was so awesome watching these people...even if you weren't stoned you felt like you were watching them move towardstage like that. At the end, the performers invited everyone to come up on stage....we were sitting close so we went up, everyone was hugging each other...can you imagine that happening this day and age? It was so awesome. I was filled with the spirit when we left for sure! A totally wonderful experience and now a precious memory.
