Hmm, this thread has taken an interesting turn. I'm learning a lot of things I didn't know about the difference between a republic and a democracy. It really is ridiculous how much control the government has over our property, land, and lives.

Move to a 2nd world country. You'll get more bang for your buck, especially if you're aiming to be self-sufficient.

Unfortunately, moving out of country (regardless of where) is not an option. I am divorced from my son's dad and he would never consent to me moving out of country with him. And obviously, I would never give up my kid.

and abroad?in an english speaking country for example? there may be some countryside places rather cheap for an american .. for example where i am living in jamaica there are two americans owning land in the countryside.. sometimes i look at the rural areas and i see a lot of land available to start that kind of project and maybe one day i may do it cause me too i have this in head.this is a country where nature is bountiful and we have a lot of food falling from the trees. the country needs midwifes as well and the land taxes are ridiculous. even if this is not a material kingdom like america there is much more freedom and looseness in the lifestyle and for myself i feel freer in a country like that than in what i will call babylon.. my email is: rootsmystory@yahoo.com for who wants to see the countryside and its potential to start a commune. i am not ready to start this right now but one day i will need a few people to associate with but they have to be extremely tolerant too cause a commune in a foreign country must have nationals too and cultural differences are sometimes strong.. the problem for a commune or an ecovillage is to find the right distance between people and for me it is not too close and not too far..just enough for a good contact with people..

Ozarks is best Imo. very lax sense of things there as well. don't really have to worry about much there.

Jamaica would be an awesome place for one, went there when I was 13 on a cruise with the family, tour bus driver quickly had a joint going around and was introduced to rum punch when we stopped for lunch. What I can rememer of the two days we spent on the Island was that it was an incredibly beautiful place and that Sugar cane is a really really good thing. I can only imagine the diversity of crops one could grown in a climate like that.

And the Ozarks are simply awesome, beautiful landscapes down there, may move that way if I veer from the plan of a pickup & camper living along the coastline crab fishing for myself & doing odd jobs to keep the truck running. (Highly possible)

Be ready to have to make your own soil in the Ozarks (Or relocate large amounts of whats there into one area), alot of the cheap property is cheap for the fact it's mostly limestone / sandstone just a few inches below whatever soil you do see (Not to mention that most of it is inaccessible by tractor due to hills and runoff creeks). Not impossible to work around, just difficult for those wanting any sort of commercial level of farming. but raised beds and growing on composted forest litter works really, really well (Especially if mixed with wood char and sand in a crude sort of terra-preta). Still if you only want a couple acres of garden space for the Members it shouldn't be a big deal to find a plot with enough flat ground to where it wont be a problem.
