PITTSBURGH, PA- The United States Coast Guard and its civilian Auxiliary volunteers urge boaters to be extra cautious this boating season. The issue is "deadheads," that can get you if you don't watch out.

Not devotees of the rock band "The Grateful Dead," deadheads are logs or large trees in waterways
submerged just below the surface and are difficult to see. Heavy rains wash these dead trees and other debris into waterways and they can cause unexpected hazards.

If a fiberglass boat strikes a deadhead, the boat could be damaged or even sunk. The boat's lower unit could be ripped off, causing a hole in the transom and make the boat inoperable. Assigning a diligent forward watch or "lookout person" can help prevent this potential danger.

The Coast Guard and Auxiliary want every boater to enjoy the water, be on the lookout for deadheads, and always wear wear his or her life jacket. Take these measures and you will survive!
