i was recently thinking of becoming a mechanic so that i could buy and sell cars privately on the internet without claiming taxes. right now i am aerating lawns in april (which is hard but i can make a killing) and sealing driveways for the rest of the warm half of the year ( till mid october basically). i wonder how long i would need to go to school to become a mechanic. any mechanics out there can recommend a school to me. i would have to sell cars that aren't registered to my name though and i would have to deal with people thinking that i am shady all the time. i tried to curbside b4 and i didn't work out--I LOST MONEY.

a curbsider is a dealer posing as a private citizen

theres nothing wrong with buying a car and reselling it...just pay the taxes when you buy it..different areas have different limits on how many you can flip per year before they start demanding you get a dealers license

you dont need to be a mechanic to work on a car you own but you need to be safe of course ...licenses are only required when doing repairs for compensation (at least in my area)

and forget about school...just go out and get hired on as an apprentice somewhere

if the tax people start harassing you just get a lawyer...its no different than anyone else making a bit of money with their hobby...such as fixing computers or selling shit on ebay...just dont go overboard with it

Trade School in your area. I went to NDSSS Whapeton 2 qtrs. Auto mech program program was a two year course and I belive you went an extra qtr after that for transmissions.

trade school up here is required after certain stages of apprenticeship are reached

its not a pre-requisite to starting an apprenticeship

license requires 8000 hours of in shop time before writing the standards test

Best tip, get an old car that is cheap to fix and figure out how to get it running. Do so by by getting a repair manual like Chiltons, etc, some basic tools, using internet forums when stumped. In about 6months time you will not only have the skills, but also the confidence to do the work.

This is how I did it :)
