god is not needed in the equation of life, for example speed is the dimension of length divided by the dimension of time, god is not needed to explain speed so why add him the universe can be explained without god, and as time goes by, god and the heavens will have no places left to hide. morality does not come out of religion it just adopts the quality of morality as an authority https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q715ty5hLt4"]Stephen Fry's beautiful comments on a world without God. - YouTube science will win, because it works - Stephen Hawking It doesn't matter if you believe in science or not, because it still works regardless which sadly is not the same for religions -- the power of belief, however science is indifferent to human ambitions.
Science is a dead end because all scientific finding is filtered through the 5 human senses. Religion is a dead end because the word of God is almighty, and for all we know, the word of god is a metaphorical experiment that was never made to be taken so seriously. I firmly believe that humans are still evolving and we should experience without judgment, without classification and personification and realize a fresh understanding of the nature of existense. We are not the constantly improving race that we wish to believe we are.
I agree with you, why is this diatribe in Sanctuary? Christianity forum maybe, Atheism forum definitely but putting it in Sanctuary is a call to atheists to come to a forum that by the rules of the forum they don't belong. This thread should be moved to one the other forums, I just mentioned, because it just doesn't belong here.
Ram: Did you ever read Don Quixote Ram? It's a really funny book! : D lol The atheists you run into must be pretty rough! Why are you trying to round us all up?! : D We may not be perfect, but we're humans too! thedope: How only one?
There is not one thing that we do not do for our own good, depending on our model of what good is. Perhaps you feel to be helpful or altruistic is selfless, but it is not. That model of being helpful, is then, your model of good. You ask in what way a belief in god is a practical thing. We are in fact, devotional in nature. We are devoted to our good and the good of our own. To discern the truth of this statement, you need only to examine your own passions. So by practical, I mean what it looks like in practice. We are sparked by a magnanimous intent that ranges from the instinct of self preservation to the sense of gratitude.
The way I see it, if a person understands that other people are beings like themselves, they can understand that like their own, the suffering of those others is bad and their happiness is good. Since good and bad only have meaning because of feeling beings (for if the universe were just a bunch of objects smashing together and chemicals reacting, there would be no good or bad) what more logical basis for what is good than the feelings of those beings?
In the case of human beings, the emotional body, feelings, is tethered to description, that is, in what terms you couch your experience. So, while sensation can be instructive we can also drive ourselves into hysteria by the story we tell of our lives, or the his-story we make. We live in a world of conditions. There are physical conditions and there are also the conditions that we speak into existence. Originally the word condition means to "speak with". Language is emotive vibration.
True, what constitutes joy or suffering will be filtered through the culture and outlook of the person in question. I don't think that changes the fact that causing suffering is bad, and causing joy is good. You can get really existential about it, but most people live very much in the real and physical world, and hurting them or making them suffer will generate negative emotions and negative results. There can be a lot of debate about what hurts people, but I don't think there is much wiggle room as to if it is ok to hurt them.
no, i most definitely do not think that way.thats the complete opposite if what i think.being helpful to me is not a feeling of being helpful.rather more the privilege of being able to.the same way people that think like me are also unconditionally for the better good of me.everyone being for the better good of someone else.its called unconditional love.thats the only real kind of love in the whole world.the only kinda good worth giving and receiving.one thing i can' t stand is when ya hear people sayin', i did this an i did that, when they are talking about some good thing they have done for someone, cos it just makes me think.why d'ya do it in the first place?, cos ya really cared or just for self praise and somethin' ta talk about.that ta me is a very poor version of what the word good means ta me.and why do i have to examine my own passions? passions are not born to be examined.passions are simply gifts to be lived an shared with the whole of humanity.you don't give to get.thats selfseeking.not selfless.you simply give because you care.
Alla your model of good. Passion means suffering. Examine your suffering and you may find you are complicit in it. In a world of condition it takes two to manifest. In a pursuit there is the one who pursues and one who is pursued. We never do anything alone. When we fight we fight together, when we love we love together and that you do to your neighbor you do also to yourself. I agree that love is without condition. Love, being without condition, is beyond what can be taught, but it is possible to remove the barriers we have built against it.
Who, what, or where is the author of harm? We are energy in an energetic environment, innately destined as biological beings to perish for the enrichment of all in a metabolic fire. This we share in common. Where is the harm when blunt object meets flesh and causes a contusion? This is the natural effect of energetic exchange, flesh being more yielding than blunt object. Is there fault in that fact? Perhaps you think there is if the blunt object is wielded by another human being, but we get the very same effect if that blunt object happens to be a falling tree. What causes the tree to fall, the energetic conditions it finds itself in. The same is true of human beings, they are caused to fall because of the energetic conditions they find themselves in. The storms in the atmosphere are reflected by the storms in our consciousness and vice versa. You may not believe this but it is not possible for another to hurt you without your wholehearted consent. Now you may argue this fact, but note that argument speaks to the abundance of your convictions about the world. Anxiety is caused by the misapprehension of what is so, consequently the truth sets us free. Your mind is a kingdom you alone can rule and intent is the gravity around which all our experiences coalesce. When we refuse to let anyone else set the tenor of our experience, then we find ourselves invulnerable to attack.
suffering is a natural part of life. its what we do with it that counts.all adversitys overcome used in a positive way is all good.
Have you ever thought independently about anything? Does it seem a bit ridiculous to you to quote the Bible to show that atheists are wrong? Many people calling themselves atheists say they don't believe in God, which is different from saying there is no God. And for a proselytizing Christian to accuse atheists of not leaving others alone is more than a bit ironic. By posting a confused jumble of ilogic and calling it "Christian", you help to discredit our faith.
