Arctic sea ice volume reaches record low for second straight year

I would sooner trust "data from satellites, Navy submarines, moorings, and field measurements as well as atmospheric information." than some thrown together graphic by some unknown "climate expert" who doesn't even have their facts straight!

Here's a decent article from last year that goes with both sides. http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/10370955

The skeptical end doesn't sound very convincing to me, but at least it is represented in a fair fashion.

I think instead of arguing back and forth about how much humans effect the environment, everyone should just agree that humans indeed have an effect on the environment, either on a small scale or a larger scale. Thus enabling people to stop wasting time on silly arguments and to start taking personal responsibility for how we treat the very thing which sustains our lives.

People that vehemently deny any man made impact on the earth seem to be looking for excuses to run away from personal responsiblity.

What I don't understand is... if the skeptics are right and we really don't know - wouldn't it be best to play it safe and change our habits anyway rather than rolling the dice?

Arctic Ice Volume Decreasing. Looks like 50% less in summer than average.

Note: they only go back to 1979, as that is when they started recording this stat.

I'm sure there are charts and graphs to prove anything, either way, whichever you want, anytime. anyhow, anywhere. You just have to find them (or make them up).

Who's doin' a great job of that?

Ichabod, the graph I just posted is the ONLY source for such data, NOAA.

As NOAA is the only agency who processes all the weather data for the US government. Without it we would have no way of knowing what is going on, around the world. Visit the website and LEARN SOMETHING instead of spouting bullshit on this website.

Yes, you can find all sorts of data to support an ANTI-CLIMATE CHANGE POLITICAL AGENDA if you look because there are millions being paid to people by the Coal and Oil Industries to produce bogus info and propaganda. However, if any other source does NOT provide the same stats as NOAA, IT IS LYING.

And if you come on to this site spouting corporate propaganda you will be banned.

they can tell.. they can tell a lot from the ice caps.. that's why they go to the ice caps and drill out the ice cores.. they trap chemicals that where in the atmosphere.. the ice itself can be aged and thus be able to tell when these chemicals in the air.. they can also get a pretty good estimate as to how warm or cold the weather was in a given range because the ice cores will have layers.. layers that are expanded(high amounts of precipitation and cold) or thinner layers showing melt or lack of precipitation...

Part of the reason for this is the melting of the ice caps has accelerated, adding so much more COLD, fresh water to the North Atlantic, that it is cooler and wetter in Northern Europe than it has been. No big mystery there. Climate scientists predicted exactly this. Expect more of this each year as more ice melts.

Think about putting ice into a glass of water. What happens? The water cools down, cooling the entire glass. The cold glass then precipitates moisture (condensation) on the outside of the glass. This is what's happening to Europe.

BTW, this year in the Pacific Northwest, we had a much cooler July than normal with more rain than normal. That was the ice caps and glaciers melting sending COLD, fresh water into the Northern Pacific.

But then once the ice is all melted in the summers, and the glaciers have disappeared, guess what'll happen then? You don't need to be a rocket scientist...

You will then see Global Warming each summer that will be unprecedented in human history. The fires will be OUT OF CONTROL. And with the extra methane being released by the disappearing permafrost and the seabeds, it's a volatile combo. The real question now is: Can civilization survive? Can Man survive?

It's been fucking wet and cold up here in the pacific northwest.

Summer didn't start for us until mid July.

It sucks to see it slipping away into cold right now.

But at least everything stayed green and alive, and the wildflowers flourished much much longer. And reservoirs never dried up like they usually do.

coffee dude, i lived in seattle for almost 17 years.
the first 10 years of my life i lived in duluth, minnesota. between that time frame i lived in texas.

people who have lived in washington state their whole lives have no ideal what 'real' cold or hot is.
people who have lived in minnesota their whole lives have no ideal what 'real' hot is.
people who have live in texas their whole lives have no ideal what 'real' cold is.
those of us who have moved around to different extrem climates know the differance.
belive me coffee mate (pun intented :biggrinjester: ) the pacific northwest never 'really' gets cold and/or hot... that is one of the main reasons why i love the pacific northwest! :2thumbsup:

since i have moved back to san antonio from seattle... i find it hard to belive i'm back in texas!

You're right it hasn't been cold as I've forgotten what cold was. Prague winters make the northwest feel like the tropics.
But up here it's been a very dreary and cool year below normal summer temperatures, thus it's colder than normal.

It's true. the devil has moved to Texas and brought Hellfire with him. Texas is not only been in the triple digets since June 1st till three days ago when we got down to the upper 90s.

Texas is litterly ON FIRE, well it was till the rain came three days ago. It put out the fires, thank goodness. The devistation is what is left.

I have lived in Texas 30 yrs, born here actually, moved around a lot, oregon, colorado, aeizona, new mexico and a few other places. I have know the cold but I have never experienced the extream heat as we had this summer, anywhere. Last winter was colder then it had been in 15 yrs also.

It's the El Nino'/La Nina', Enso effect.

Well if you can remember the 60s you weren't "THERE". Since you can't, I guess you were right in the middle of it all... Lucky YOU! ;)
