There are still cats who believe in some of the same values that the 60's protesters did. We're not nearly as large a group as they were then but we're still here. I'd like to think that if we all came together with these views we could effect a change in society for the better man Peace n' love
Tell that to my probation officer:2thumbsup: All the people who went and faced teargas saw that it wasn't enough, so when they sold out they made shit pretty hard to fight. And they've pretty much won the propaganda war.
i hear a lot of people "selling out" right here. but when i talk to people on the street, even in otherwise "conservative" places, or take a peek at INDIE media, guess what? there are a hell of a lot of people who aren't. and even people who may have "sold out" in one context to survive, haven't and don't sell out in every other. also as vanilla gorilla pointed out, the 60s weren't because no one sold out. the 60s were because of a demographic. of course the world doesn't change because someone held up a sign. the world changes when huge numbers of people willingly go to jail (or suffer other forms of living martyrdom) for peacefully holding up signs. enough for other people to start thinking maybe they have a chance too. if that didn't work, do you really think nixxon would have pulled america's ass out of viet nam? or that the timid little love cults all beliefs start out as, would even have grown into the world dominating influences that some of them have. sure politicians adopted them for their own twisted and ulterior reasons, but before they did, before they got to that point, to where they would be useful to do that with and to, that's what all the martyrdoms were about and for. selling out is when you take corporate media's word for "can't". "it's all over". or "can't because that's against (this mythical so called) human nature". THAT's "selling out".
There's only handful of people that we have who are willing to take it to the streets. Today's youth "tweets" and "blogs" and "paints slogans on social media sites." I hate to tell you. But it's over. They won.
Lots of people of all ages are depressingly apathetic. But I hate to tell you, it's only over when you accept that it's over. And I'm a long way from that. I guess it's over for you, and they won for you. For me, they've only won the bits and pieces that they've REALLY won.
So what do you want me to do? I can't even get enough people willing to help compile a list of "safe" email providers. Look for yourself : http://www.hipforums.com/newforums/showthread.php?t=435796&f=38 All anyone can do now is keep their fucking heads down and pray for a miracle. Or leave for Peru which is what I'm planing on doing.
The majority of people have always been apathetic or willing to bare whatever conditions they are in. There are only sometimes moments when it seems right to together make a change. That you think today should be like the most overromanticized counterculture period get you nowhere. The 60's were not there mainly because of the people (the people have not changed), but more because of the other conditions. Although sometimes it seems like history is repeating it is also now a very different time. You can take everything to the streets but you can't expect it to get the same impact as 50 years ago. You can get sad and angry about the popularity of twitter, facebook, etc. but really in the end people are just living in their time. That some have trouble adapting or ignoring and wish they lived in another 60's is just another form of apathy. To lose faith in a generation because they're not living up to your hippie expectations is very pointless. There are lots of youth who care, they just don't care for views that are focussed on a subculture from the past.
Yup. It's also the proverbial "catch-22" . If I use the online medium to try and reach people, then I'm part of the system and "no better" than anyone else, so anyone I touch starts to "tweet" and "blog." But if I don't use the online medium, I have no way to make my message heard by the public. Therefore I do not have a voice to speak with. Damned if I do and damned if I do not. I'm not trying to change anything. It's estimated that there are over 300 online forums and blogs and even more facebook accounts dedicated to my cause. But our last protest march only draw out 60 people, the majority over 40 years of age. *** There was a time when each person could stand on a soap box to make themself heard. Unfortunately, the government decided to stop attacking freedom of speech and found away to get rid of the soap box by renaming it Internet. *****
You can turn it around as well. Why is it such a problem for you the soap box turned digital? It could reach more people now.
Digital never reaches more people. It just shuts up the public voice of dissent. Just like when television and radio becomes digital. Pirate broadcasts come to an end. Same can be said for underground newspapers and books. The only media left is youtube and that gets cut faster than you can imagine. Hell, they started demanding my age for old Dick Van Dyke show reruns. It's over and they won.
The hippie movement is over yes. It is not so bad, it had it's purpose. It only seems bad if you dwell in the past and get sad everybody's living in the now that you dislike.
People that still have a message to spread adapt. It's true. Now you have adapt and accept the changes in methods. If there had been internet in the 60's there would have been less protesting in the streets as well. "'They' won" sounds only laughable to me, I'm sorry. It's not a football match nor a war. Perhaps some hippies still have a battle to fight, yes, but I doubt it's against 'them'.
I'm not living in the past. I'm living in the present and I have to face the facts of this present. These people are only going to keep getting more power. The North American Nazis created the 1970s generation who are just as racist and corrupt as their parents. In return that 1970s generation created "Generation Inc." Who are even worst than their parents and grandparents. How do we fight? By Internet groups like Anonymous ? Newsflash for you about Anonymous, they are controlled by 5 people and the rest are "script kiddies" that don't give a damn about the cause. They just think it's cool to attack big companies and governments. Like Che Guavera who was shocked that there were revolutionaries that cared little about the cause but fought for money. So Generation Inc. cares about nothing but itself. Face the facts, they won and we lost. It's over.
You're just giving me "Internet Rhetoric". Revolutions are fought and won in the streets and not online. It is only the over 40 crowd and a few non conformist people that care. Soon they are all going to label us as either "old fart remembering the good old days" or "possible terrorist".
Ah at least now we know who you mean by they now I believe the flaws that may be apparent in a part of today's youth are not to blame on any other kind of 'them' than the people who raised us. And no, they were not brainwashed via tv and radio by some bastards with a secret agenda. We the people wanted and have created this... I like to add with thanks to a lot of freedoms we've obtained since the 60's. 'They' (the old hippies) probably didn't expect it to turn out like this. We don't need a revolution. You are not your labels and 'they' probably aren't gonna label you possible terrorist unless you're going weatherman style or something...
