Recently I have been pretty into making belts out of bicycle tyres. It is quite easy. Here's how: Get a bike tyre (Shocked?) Wash it extremely well if it's used (which it should be, for a proper recycling project like this ) Flatten it out on something and cut out the middle section. The easiest way to do this is to lay a ruler down on it in the middle and use something to slice down the length of the tyre. You will now have a long strip of rubber thin enough to fit through belt loops. Cut it to your preferred belt length. If you are lucky, you can get two belts out of one tyre. Fasten a belt buckle of some kind to one end. While you do this, use a strip of tyre that you cut off to form that little strap the excess belt goes through. I used kevlar thread and a tough needle to do this, but if you want to get the proper screws used on belts, go crazy. cut the other end to whatever shape you like the end of a belt to be. Work out where you want the holes to be, then put them there. The best way I have found to do this is to hammer a medium sized nail though it, then use a lighter to heat the nail, turn it a couple of times in the hole then remove it, thus melting a hole in the rubber. Don't use your fingers for this. You now have a belt. Tips: used bike tyres will often be flatter, and obviously cheaper. If you find it hard to pull the rubber through belt loops, try covering the inside with tape, this will make it more slippery. Some racing tyres will make a belt that is almost impossible to tell apart from a normal leather one. Add a thin coat of spray-on varnish to make it look even more like leather. Some people sell belts made from tyres for 40 dollars, I have made six for under 10 dollars. Enjoy
Nice idea, I've got to change a cycle tyre in the next few months, I'll have a go making this, Nice share - Thank you ;-)
really cool, man. i exploded a rear tire a few months ago and didn't throw it out yet. there's potential there, but tbh..i don't think i'll make one. is that pic just from the web, or one of the ones you made?
