It does have it's own myths, now mythical past, special clothes and chants, icons, sacred spots, sense of persecution....

Most importantly a massive proportion of hippies will believe strongly in something and don't seem to know why

Maybe in the 1950s and 1960s people started doing hippy things just because they wanted to and it was the first time that people who were listened to were allowed to so it was something new, but for people who aren't in their 60s and 70s it had never been anything except a fashion, or even a cult???

    thoughts?

I think this is at the heart of it. I'd say it probably just makes them idiots rather than religious though.

You have to be careful with the whole "this is a religion" thing. You'll sometimes get the (usually religious) morons who spout the "evolution is just a religion!" kind of crap in a massively ironic attempt to discredit the scientific method (talk about shitting all over your own back yard). What they fail to understand is a very basic concept: blind faith requires no valid evidence, yet science actively seeks that evidence before drawing any (always tentative) conclusions.

What makes a belief system a religion? It probably is linked to beliefs which have no evidence, but you get "spiritualists" and other such types who don't have the rituals found in mainstream religion. I think it's easier to think of it as those who possess adequate critical thinking skills and those who do not.

When a person has one unfounded belief they often have many more along the same lines. Those who believe medicine is evil are likely to believe in crystal healing and homeopathy and other such nonsense. That's because they are the type of person who does not ask for evidence, who chooses to go with what "feels" right raher than evaluating properly, and who has built an entire worldview based on no valid evidence whatsoever.

By definition: No God = No Religion

Apart from that you can elevate anything to a cult or religion. Heck, you can become a guru and make millions.

Not true. Buddhism, one of the world's great religions, does not have the concept of God.

No, it's not a religion in any way. It's more like a movement.

Yes and no. As far as I know the strict sense of the word was originally that of worshipping one or more gods.

You are right in saying that the word religion commonly also includes non-theistic beliefs. But I prefer to call them beliefs instead of religions.

hippy is a lifestyle, a social movement and a set of beliefs. i see how that can be associated with a religion. however, i personally would not identify hippy as a religion

Hippie is not a Religion - It is a Faith ... of Conviction, Conscience and Belief in the Impossible :)
