I wonder what happens to that information? I bet health/life insurance companies would pay a lot of money to know who is purchasing tobacco and booze.

Mine was at the Wakarusa music festival; they scanned everyone who wanted free cigs.

They scan me quite a bit. I look younger for my age too. I don't like it because I do wonder where the information goes. And I don't smoke, I buy packs for my friends sometimes. So I get tobacco coupons from Camel in the mail. WHAT THE FUCK!?!?!
When I buy beer I usually only buy a couple 22 oz, so they don't scan. But if I buy cases, especially at corporations, they scan me.

Can they not just look at it and determine your age from that. I would refuse to let them scan it.

their scanning it to make sure it is you on the ID and to make sure the ID is legit, nothing more. They have one at the place I used to work.
It was not set up to through the internet, just read the info on the bar code.

There's nothing beyond a photo that links me to that ID as far anyone else should know - and that could be easily forged. And let me assure you that anything with a barcode was designed to be transmitted digitally.

Mark my words and mark them well: I believe they are keeping this information in databases and they will, if they don't already, sell them to the highest bidder (or any bidder for that matter). Just because there's no wire leading to a box that says "internet" on it, does not mean they're not recording the transaction.

Your only basis for that assumption is that "it's possible.."

You're right, but lately, in the U.S. - it seems like if it's possible, and it's bad, it's just around the corner.

So ok, the small business I worked for was that just wanted to get peoples information so they could sell it to the highest bidder.

I'm confused because I thought it was so the company I worked for did not get ripped off by some lowlife thinking just cause he rented a 28,000 dollar piece of equipment it his now.

We're talking apples and oranges, but since you bring up oranges I'll illustrate:

And you think this company would be above selling and making a profit on givng the name of that said lowlife (and his address and phone number and whatever information can be gleaned from the transaction) to - say - a marketing firm? If you think this is fiction, I can assure you that it's happening a million times over as we speak - maybe not with the company you're referring to but thousands of others just like it.

Wow, this is really scary. We don't have this in England but sounds like something they would love to do. Our new driving licences have chips in them but at the moment they are not scanned, but you are right, someone with money will find a way to start accessing the info.

I don't doubt that you know how your machine works (though unless you are, in fact a software developer, I have serious doubts that you have gone through the software code line-by-line to know for absolutely certain that this program isn't storing client information). but unless you've analyzed the code of the proprietary software of the gas station/convenience store I'm referring to then you really haven't done much to convince me that my suspicions aren't justified.

That makes no f'in sense what so ever.. Because beyond looking at the picture and stats.. the bar code on your license ain't gonna tell you any extra information. Does he look 29? is he Male? Roughly 5'8? what more would you have to verify. I dunno about other states.. but from what i've seen.. licenses are not laminated pieces of paper anymore like they use to be where you could exact-o knife a card and change info.. they are printed plastic with different security images
