I've hitchhiked quite a lot in my life. I traveled most of Europe in that manner a few years back. Have you hitchhiked and what kind of adventures have you had while doing so? Or horror stories, if there are any.
I haven’t recently, feet have been planted for a while now. But last time I did I was picked up by a middle age man during a rain storm late at night. It started out fine, but after a few min he said he was going to go to his trunk and get a towel so I could dry off. I though alright, I will keep an eye on him to make sure I am not taking a tire iron to the head but a towel would be great. He came back with a towel alright, then proceeded to rub it on my face while touching my thighs with his other hand. I went to open the door to get out saying I wasn't into that, but he started to drive as I was exiting the car. I exited the car in motion (it wasn't even going fast but man I tumbled when my feet hit the ground) and he drove off. Not a horrible experience, but not cool. Every other time I thumbed a ride it was chill. Usually people that pick you up, are alright people in the first place. I still pick someone up if I see them hitching, especially someone that is backpacking.
Well I got laid once when i hitched. that was on my great European tour, lol. I was hitchhiking in Czech Republic and a truck picked me up. the guy was ca 27 or so and decent, we got along, one thing led to another....and there it was.
that sucks. especially in the rain. I agree with you that most people that pick up hitchhikers are pretty decent. I haven't had any really bad experiences. Once a guy picked me up and explicitly asked me for sex, i said no, got out of the car and it ended there. Another time one guy did try to force me (i was barely out of high school that time), but i was stronger than him and made it clear to him that it wasn't gonna happen. those are the only 2 times it didn't go all that well.
I was right out of highschool when it heppened too. They must like young uns... But I have been smoked up a few times, met some cool people, heard stories of thier travles ect. I was even picked up by a family with three young kids in the van once. Really yuppie type people so it was surprising, but very cool. Goes to show there are still some decent people in the world.
I was hitch hiking 4 months ago. I made a post here saying that I would write a detailed report about it. But I still haven't got around to it. I traveled close to 8000 miles. Didn't encounter any bad people. Not even once. I left long island, ny. Went to nyc. Up to Buffalo, ny. From there i went to Topeka, Kansas. Down to Atlanta, Georgia. To Tallahassee, FL. Then Orlando, FL. Then tampa,fl. And then I slowly worked my way up to upstate ny. I really need to take time and write a nice story Peace T.O
You really should. I'd love to hear all about you. I haven't hitchhiked for a long time at this point. I never had anything bad happen. My favorite ride was this cute lil family picked me up. They had a bunch of running around in my area before going where they were headed which was where I was going, even had family dinner with them. Their son was sooo sweet. I gave him a lil shaker I had in my bag. ...Good times. It was a nice change of pace. I haven't had any trouble with anyone I've ever picked up. I just ask for a story. Where ya been, things you've seen...I never was on the road full time and I kick myself now for it.
you should write it down somewhere. otherwise some of the details will be lost. i traveled over 10,000 miles (in two separate trips) by hitchhiking 5-6 years ago and now i only remember the highlights. i wish i'd kept a journal or something, but didn't bother with it.
I haven't hitchhiked in a very long time, but used to regularly with a friend in the 90's. Once we travelled through Europe and got picked up by a German truck driver. He was going in our direction (south of France) but had to make a stop in Paris to get his truck loaded (or unloaded, I forgot). That same night Germany was playing the Soccer World Cup finals, and he had the radio on to listen to it, as he was a major fan of the team. Neither of us were great soccer fans, but listening to the German team win the World Cup with such an enthusiastic fan was a very cool experience!
My first hitchhiking was to Kadykchan, on M56 Kolyma, I just was 18 years old. This man (Mikhail) is my good friend, 9 years after this day, this time also was one of my greatest in life. On the return to home, I had high fever, my family were also very angry I travel to Kadykchan in secret, but it was worth the bad.
i have one hitchiking true story that i still find strange today. i was hitchin' to somewhere and it got really late and dark.it was bout 1am and a car pulled up.there was a few members of the same family in it.anyway, the driver then told me a story.he said i dont normally pick up hitchers, but i could'nt pass you, because he said in 1962 the last place my sister was seen was on this very same patch of road before she disappeared.it turned out i was hitchin' from the same part of the road.between the village and her home a few miles further out. she was hitchin' home but never got there.3weeks after she had gone missing her body was found in a nearby quarry.the person that murdered her were caught later.what i found the weirdest thing about it was she had gone missing just 2months before i was born.the same year 1962. i still keep in touch with that family today.her brother told me he always had this thing where he felt guilty that he was'nt there to save her.eventhough he should'nt have felt that way.but he said he felt that by stoppin' for me that night helped him a bit.that someone else was safer that night.the other strange thing was from the minute i got in the car, they did'nt feel like strangers.i felt like i'd always known them.
happens with some people. i've met several individuals i've felt connected to somehow from the first moment i saw them at the same time not knowing a single thing about them.
