I am 16 and my dad has schizophrenia. I read online that you start feeling symptoms of schizophrenia at age 15 and marijuana increases these symptoms from age 15-18. Kids call me crazy all the time at school and they say that I scare them because I stare off into space and and I am not too social. Does it sound like I could have schizophrenia?

The fact that your dad has schizophrenia may play a larger role in you developing schizophrenia than the weed. Schizophrenia usually develops and diagnosed in late adolescents and 20's.

There has been evidence to suggest Marijuana and other drugs can bring forth certain mental disorders such as schizophrenia but smoking marijuana in and of itself has not been proven to cause schizophrenia.

There is alot of neurological growth and change as a teenager, the 'symptoms' you have given would give me no reason to think you have schizophrenia but if it's something that is troubling to you, maybe you should talk to your dad or a doctor if possible.

While marijuana will NOT increase your level of schizophrenia.. It definitely can trigger it.. as can any other psychedelic... unfortunately you cannot blame the marijuana... you must blame your shitty genetics

    No, it couldn't.

It only makes people who are dumb to begin with dumber.

I was like that in high school, too, but then again I have no history of schizophrenia in my family. I have always been "odd" by most people's standards I am sure, but I am definitely not crazy.

I think you're just being paranoid. When you say you're not too sociable, it could just be your personality.

Paranoia and depression can often come from the over-doing of the subject matter along with bouts of schizophrenia (just me then?) though it seems that if 'dad' had it, then it is that which is a contibutary factor ... also

@OP... Is this a genetic version of schizophrenia? Do more family members on your dads side have it? If its ONLY your dad.. your chances are very very slim.. as it is not likely going to be a genetic disorder then.. If it runs deep in your family.. it'll never hurt to see a mental health specialist while you're still covered by your parents insurance

can you tell the difference between what is real and fake? if you have schizophrenia you can't tell what is fake or not. just cus you stare off into space and daydream like lots of other people is simply that daydreaming. daydreaming is very common. you could have ADD.

your worry about what other people think about you is what causes paranoia, not the weed.

you have to always ignore the negative things people say, unless you truly respect the person already. it can get a lot worse and truly drive you crazy. people are mean. trust me.

I've heard of psychedelics "triggering" schizophrenia, but not weed... Not to say it's not possible. But what your describing doesn't sound like that of a schizophrenic. I stare into space all the time.. But it's because I'm thinking. I mean are you aware that you stare off into space and stuff?

And if your dad has it, there is a good chance you'll develop it sorry to say.

    officially? Or in your opinion?

I've seen stuff on Weed after smoking a ton... but even the highest high on weed i have doesn't compare to the lowest LSD experience....

When I see stuff on weed, it's only just patterns, like I'll see patterns in tree leaves similar to someone sober staring at the clouds and finding shapes. But everything is still in the same reality. While a psychedelic will bring you to (depending on your opinion) 1. a higher form of reality 2. true reality 3. an escape from reality.

IMO weed is its own thing, not a psychedelic/stimulant/etc.
