Does anybody think that somebody's drug of choice says something about that person's personality and opinion of life? If yes please post why.

To some extent I suppose. However, even myself as an example would prove otherwise. My favorite drugs are opioids and stimulants. Most people would stereotype people who liked these drugs as losers, self-centered bastards, unintelligent, etc. (I have heard all of these terms used on this site towards users of such drugs). However, I am not those things. I am a graduate student getting paid a sizeable salary for teaching Calculus at a major University. I am well-mannered and altruistic. I have an ego, but I actively work in keeping it in check. I never have stolen, ripped off, or told a very serious lie. Nor have I ever cheated. As for the 'loser' statement, you can decide if you think I am a loser, but in an economy where I am one of the only people in my High School friend group with a job that isn't back-breaking and miserable, who will be obtaining a useful degree in a difficult field, I don't think I am a loser.

The reason I like those drugs is that I simply like to feel happy and content, which those drugs deliver consistently. Look up 'euphoriant' on wikipedia and note that only the opioids and stimulants are 'true' euphoriants. It is worth noting though, that I also enjoy occasional use of psychedelic drugs and Cannabis. I hate alcohol and 'downers' (like benzos) though.

So, as you can see, the situation is not quite cut-and-dry.

Yes, I think People's drug of choice says a great deal about their personality, I dunno so much about their opinion of life but I suppose to some extent.

It's interesting to me that many people's drug of choice seems to change over time, so I wonder if that change is characterized more by a person's personality changing, enviornment changing, or the drug simply not being as effective as it once was.

^ Guerilla: Just to play 'devils advocate', since you claim there IS a positive correlation between drugs of choice and personality, what is your take on my situation? Not to harp on myself, but I don't think I have the personality of a 'stereotyped' junkie or speed freak by any means. Or does the fact that I take the drugs as prescribed invalidate those stereotypes in me?

My take is that you misinterpreted the question and that your generalizations don't apply to the thread topic.

I viewed the op referring to personality generalizations more along the lines of say... if you are stimulant user you may have a more rigid, straightforward way of thinking and be interested in things like *ahem* mathematics, if you are a psychedelic user you may be more apt to idealistic views and passionate about arts, downers a desire to be carefree, etc.

Ok. I see. I took his statement as a more 'accusatory' type thing saying: If you do hard drugs you are a loser deep down, and if you do [insert the OPs 'acceptable' drug class], then you are a good person.

I jumped to that conclusion since such thinking pops up on a pretty regular basis in these forums so I tend to 'spot' it in posts that don't even have to do with it.

As for what you are saying, stimulants and Mathematics are the perfect marriage. However, higher level mathematics also require a good amount of so-called 'non-linear' thinking (take subjects like Analysis, Abstract Algebra, Topology), so a good mathematician also enjoys the occasional psychedelics or Cannabis. I also find opioids to be good for inducing non-linear thinking patterns if taken in reasonable (ie: not enough to make you pass out/ nod out) doses. So that explains my choices I suppose.

    This...

For instance I knew a guy who was really anxious all the time about his life and the way people viewed him, guess what his favorite drug was? Xanax

Thank you Etkearne for essentially making this thread about yourself.

I did not mean to 'hijack' the thread, but since no one else was really replying, I didn't find it objectionable to use myself as an example. Please don't consider it as a rude thing. In fact, I was simply trying to (1) understand what type of question you were asking and (2) generate more replies so that the topic would not die off. I don't think it is a 'bad' thing to talk about one's self if it pertains to the topic at hand, or at least to what I perceived the topic to be. That's what makes for good discussion: People talking from their own intense viewpoints in a un-hostile but assertive manner. At least that is my take on things.

I think it does. Maybe not ALL the time, but from what I've seen from my experiences it does. I prefer psychedelics, I haven't done many drugs. But LSD is my "favorite" because I think it means more, I don't take drugs just for the feeling (although that is a good addition!) Where as one of my friends pretty much only does weed cause he likes the high.

However, I don't really like recreational drug use, or drug abuse, but I sometimes will do it with a couple of kids for some fun, and I know I wouldn't want to be judged as a stoner or a drug abuser, but you said drug of CHOICE, so in that sense I'd answer yes, because it says a lot about a person. A marijuana vote would want to be just for the fun, maybe for a creative boost, or just to chill. Where as when I think of LSD, I think of a spiritual journey, something a little more meaningful.

^ Of course. God forbid someone take a drug to feel good. No. Let's make sure that in order to experience any 'feel good' effects from drugs, that they all be secondary effects to the true, "Deeper" meaning of it all. People must be labeled as 'inferior' (of course, in your statement, you do not use the word inferior although it is obvious) if they enjoy indulging in a drug for the purpose of feeling a sense of euphoria or contentment.

I mean, come on, why is it so atrocious for a person to voluntarily administer an agent that will [nearly] guarantee them euphoria for a short amount of time? Yes, psychedelics are wonderfully interesting agents, but drugs need not all produce psychedelic-like effects in order to be of merit. It is almost Puritanical for people to claim psychedelic superiority on the basis that taking drugs to 'feel good' is less 'noble.' It is just like the radical Puritans who claimed that any sensory pleasures were of less merit than intellectual pursuit. Ridiculous. BOTH pursuits are worthy and interesting.

Both taking a drug to feel good for euphoria's sake AND to take a drug to embark on a soul-searching endeavor are worthy and equal. Why are we claiming one is better than the other. That is just SO WEIRD to me in every way. Your final line highlights it all: Where as when I think of LSD, I think of a spiritual journey, something a little more meaningful. How is feeling content and at peace with the world, albeit for a temporary time, not a meaningful thing? I really don't see how it isn't just as meaningful as coming to terms with the world via a powerful psychedelic experience.

This elitism is awful and I am frankly surprised that someone who claims to have TAKEN a psychedelic drug feels this way. Those drugs in my experience, allow the mind to view things as they are, with no labels. There aren't any 'superior' or 'inferior' experiences. They are just 'experiences' and you can make whatever you want of them.

So stimulants don't 'hamper' your sexual abilities? I have 'trouble' with my abilities when directly under the influence of any stimulant from Ritalin (Methylphenidate) to Vyvanse (straight Dextro-Amphetamine). Maybe Cocaine is different in its side effect profile...

Everyone i've ever talked to, including myself has agreed with your assessment of stimulants on "abilities", but coke does for some reason seem to make sexual encounters more fun.

Yeah. It seems like Cocaine has something 'special' that amphetamine and amphetamine-like stimulants don't have. I have never done Coke, being a straight Amphetamines guy, but if I ever had the passing opportunity to try it, I would give it a go just to 'complete' my stimulant experience 'library'.

Pharmacologically, Cocaine doesn't just act on Dopamine and Serotonin like Amphetamines. It also acts on the Sigma-Receptor and NMDA receptors which could have something to do with its subtle differences from amphetamines.

my everyday drug of choice would be marijuana
    acid is my "spiritual tool"
and opana is my favorite for the feeling

idk. i think there's a time and place for any drug. haha
i don't think your favorite drug necessarily says anything about you.
    it's a case-by-case scenario. there's too many
variables to just make an assumptions based on that

I think so. I mean, I've known people who did drugs like oxys and cocaine and they all seemed kind of...spazzy and all over the place, as opposed to friends who smoked weed or did acid and were really mellow people. I'm sure it goes beyond that but this is just from my experiences.

It surely DOES go beyond that. You are just falling into the stereotype about people who use hard drugs. The only reason you know they are on Oxy and Coke is because they have an awful problem with it. But how about the countless people like me, and the other responsible opioid users on this forum, who have their use in check and would never even be suspected of drug use by even threir friends?

People who do acid and smoke pot tend to be more upfront about their use since it is more socially acceptable to young people than opioids and stimulants.

But again I am not denying the existence of complete losers who abuse hard drugs. I am just helping to clarify that use of such substances does not equate to being a junkie. And even being a junkie doesn't equate with being a loser.
