hi. my name is ervin santiago. I'm new to this. i just turned 22 and live in miami,fl. i have read a lot about communes and free spirited living. I'm interested in this type of life and explore my adventurous side that has been itching for a long time but have let my family and society hold me back. its hard trying to find a job and live this hard life with nothing in hand. I'm looking to see if anyone traveling out of miami to wherever the road takes me would be willing to give me a ride or just travel where you decide to go. I'm tired of living with my mom.

That is all you must do. Just leave. Let the crazy people fight for their junks and great big fantasies. It is a beautiful world and you will love it when you see that you are not obligated to participate in the insane games of society.

You can not live free if you have fear and the first fear you must defeat is the fear of being alone.

Get a good back pack and a good knife and a good needle to sew. Then decide on a place to walk to and find a map and start walking. You will find friends sooner or later.

I always think of this song when I go walking, short or long distance.

One foot in front of the other ..... from Rudolph

The hardest part is starting, and yea, it can be a little scarey at first but you'll meet some awesome people. Whenever I need to boost my morale about humanity, I go for a walk, the kindness, caring and generosity never ceases to amaze me.

Hippy Chick got it dead on - defeat the fear

Still, be careful out there . . . first and always !

Don't be cheap on socks and good comfortable shoes. A good tip for alot of walking is to get some pantyhose type socks... it cuts down friction and immensely reduces the chance of getting blisters ! trust me... blisters sooooo not good .

yeah my fear is probably the alone part is just it seams harder getting out of florida the others i just want to find some one for the first steps and then once i can get the hang of it continue on my own. I'm not use to the outdoors. so i am searching for my answers to how and what's needed.

If you have any questions just ask. I'll do my best to answer any questions you may have.

best of luck and don't let it get you down. start small, with daily walks or day hikes to someplace different, then maybe a weekend at a campground or similar wild place, or a 2-3 day walk... before you know it .. ta dah ...!!

and research research research, ask questions, look up information.
Knowing is Half the battle ! :)

what would i need to start and what important items are a must have?
what would be the best way to sleep?
what would be the best thing to wear?
what could i do for food?

Depends on if you plan on walking or hitching. I've done some hitching but usually I just walk.
    Must Have
everyones list will be different, a few standards, I think if you do a search on the forums there are already a couple of old threads about gear and backpacks.

    Gear
Backpack is a must, a good one.. you'll regret going cheap. doesn't need to be expensive, and not to big either. you'll end up with more stuff than you need, and you'll start out with WAY more stuff that you think you might need.

    small tent or tarp

    water

    clothes

    rain gear

my personal must haves - sketch book and pencils/sharpies, camera

some sort of entertainment or something to do for fun. learn to make crafty type things, you can often sell or trade them for food and such. musical instrument if you can play any. could make you some cash to.

    Sleeping -
Always one of my worry points, where am I going to sleep tonight !!! thats a tough one, all kinds of options, stealth camping, shelters, check out couchsurfing.org, churches. etc. On my long distance walks, I'd usually stealth camp but I was usually in rural areas or near small towns, I always avoid major big cities. I've spent nights in churches, in barns, camped in peoples yards, slept on front porches, in parks, wherever I could. often times if your polite and ask... Say hey..I'm walking across the country, can I put my tent up in your yard/wherever. if they say no, ask if they know of somewhere that you can. more often than not, I could find a place to sleep the night. I've had people actually pay a night for a motel room for me. I always had some emergency money available to get a cheap motel room in case I really needed a break and a good nights sleep and a hot shower.

    CLOTHING
Layers and is going to vary according to the weather. I always try to stick to lightweight clothes, cotton. Cargo pants are ok cause all the pockets, anything with pockets. I like pockets. velcro pockets so stuff doesn't fall out and get lost.

    FOOD
my list of starting out food
    couple packs of Ramen
    peanut butter
    trail mix
    dried fruits
    tuna in pouches
    gum or hard candy !

    there's always burger places around.
    food mini marts
    etc.
I've had people stop and give me all kinds of food, water, drinks, coffee , burgers, sandwiches, cookies and such. and trust me, it is so appreciated, it's like indescribable.

thats barely touching the surface of things. search for some threads about backpacks and gear to pack there's lots to read.

a few sites to check out

I am going to Peru in March. I will hitch hike to the borders and then find a way to walk across them because I do not have a passeport. (I do not have a birth certificate)

    CONFIDENCE
I have been thinking more about things... my adventures on the road. I came to realize that one of the best things to have is a positive outlook on your situation. Giving off positive vibes is one of your greatest tools we have. USE IT! Be confident about what you are doing, confidence and happiness attracts the same, just as being negative and down attracts more of the same.

Strangers will be more accepting of you and what you are doing, and more likely to give a little help. It makes them feel important and I believe in some way by helping and showing a little kindness to a complete stranger, they are helping themselves. On some of my longer walks, people seem amazed that I do such a thing just because I can and WANT to ! It's all about attitude and being happy. If you are content and happy to be doing what you are doing, It gives hope to those that aren't so happy in what they are doing.

    SAFETY AND PROTECTION:
I usually carry some sort of pocket knife with me. Pepper spray, and an emergency whistle. Always within easy reach. Plus, I have a pretty stout walking stick. Your first instinct is usually right. If something or someone feels "off or not right" believe it, Caution can save your life ! Always be wary and aware of your surroundings. I never wear listen to music with earphones on while on the road. I prefer to be able to hear something coming up behind me and such.

    APPEARANCE
It helps to at least appear clean. Even if you haven't had a shower or proper washing up in a week. Baby Wipes are so convenient for wiping off road grime. Take advantage of restrooms for a quick wash up whenever you can.

Just a little more things I thought of. If this needs moved to a new thread please feel to do so.

    Peace and stuff
