You need to consume more calories than you're burning. It's obviously a sensible idea that these come from healthy and balanced sources, but in theory if you want to put on weight, they can come from anywhere as long as your calorie intake is higher than before. If you're eating mostly low cal foods (broccoli rather than beef) you'll need more of them to maintain a steady weight. So basically eat more, and add in higher fat or calorie dense foods like cheese and chocolate. Make your meals more bulky and varied (falafels and veg burger in a bun with a fried egg, houmous, cheese and some salad is a good example of a varied, high cal meal, especially as you can add bits like nuts or fries if you wish) and don't be afraid to snack (cereal bars, fruits, nuts etc) Top tip: Milkshakes are calorie dense and good for you. You can get flavoured powders which have added supplements...add a load of milk and voila, a calcium-rich top-up. Also, don't be afraid of meat subs if you like them...they're protein-rich and they're easy to make meals out of, which will make it easier to eat more often.
Thank you so much for this detailed response! It seems you know what you're talking about! So basicly consume more calories? eat more right?
Well, preferably, not just chips and milkshakes. A few healthy snacks you might consider: Boiled egg: 100 kcal Wholemeal toast, one slice: 100 kcal Peanut or almond butter, 1 tbsp: 100 kcal Cheddar cheese, one inch cube: 100 kcal Sandwiches are a fantastic way for a quick 400-500 calories that's healthful. Caprese (tomato, mozzarella, and basil), peanut butter and jelly, or toasted cheese are all delicious and fast. Nuts, as Fingermouse mentioned, are also a great source of quality fats and protein - 20 almonds have about 170 calories. Sweets tend to quell the appetite, so stick to savory snacks and save your fruits until you've had your more fair share of carbs, proteins, and fats. For those who struggle with too much weight loss, fruit and sweetened drinks are not appropriate snacking choices. Potatoes, sweet or the white flesh kind, are an excellent vehicle for all sorts of other foods and slide down very easily - An olive oil based spread is an excellent way to enjoy a buttery, nutritious treat.
Eat the following at night (late enough so that you know there is no way you're gonna burn this off...something I've become quite adept at without wanting to ): potato chips and dip (I like homemade ranch/sourcream) icecream with doo-dads (nuts, sprinkles, chopped up bananas, etc) and end with either chocolate or caramel topping nice slices of French bread slathered with butter topped with cheese in toaster oven...mmmgood. Or I also like to leave off the cheese and apply blackberry jam. What is super good and fattening is to fix BOTH slices to get the cheese and jam. :2thumbsup: Do this EVERY NIGHT...not just sometimes...it'll work before you know it.
