,My husband and i want to raise AKC daschund puppies we want to know if there is anyone who could give us adivce on breeding? No matter what kind of dog, any advice is welcome! We would like to show, in Dog show's as well.
I have to agree. Plus, do you have the time to ensure your puppies stay out of puppy mills? There are just too many of these animals around suffering to be breeding more.
If you have to ask for general information on a website, you shouldn't be breeding them. Only qualified experts on the breeds should be breeding puppies. You want a puppy even a pedigree puppy go to a shelter, they are there, and they are being destroyed everyday. Mainly because hobbyists think it would be fun to raise dogs. Dashunds have a raft of problems most casual backyard breeders don't even consider. They have litter after litter of defective puppies that end up in the shelters or the landfills. Or which end up costing their new owners a fortune in vet bills to maintain with any semblance of quality of life.
If you like Daschund's perhaps you could start a rescue for them instead. You could help the ones already here that need homes.
ok well that anwered non of my question's, i said i want to show dogs, and raise then, not to make money, but to better the breed! I been doing my homework on alot of thing's, and problems with dachshunds and im getting help where i can now, this was the wrong place to get animal advice, that is for sure. Puppy mill's are bad, and shelters are even worse, i never seen a good dog in a shelter, that didnt have some problems and if they have those kinda of problems, maybe they need to be put down like some humans i know. but that is another story. Im tired of everyone thinking , as soon as someone wants to learn about a certain type of dog and do this and that, everyone gets crazy and tells people to stop breeding, there are too many dogs in the world, well yah? you know what? there are too many people in this world too and too many people having kids that throw them in the trash, i dont see anyone telling women to stop having babies cause they are part of the problem, Dam hippies
great, then you go to the shelter and get that 5 year old dog who is nasty as all hell, and you take him home to your kids, or other animals, and you give that fucker a good life. thats not for me, sorry!
why would you choose the nasty as hell dog? why not choose one of the litter of 8 week old purebreds that just came in today? sorry but i cant agree, all except 3 of my animals are rescues and the dog with issues isnt one of them. why are you so sure that your akc registered doxie isnt going to be a little sod? are you so sure that if you do breed a litter that none of them will end up in the shelter to become supposed crazed maniacs? i have worked for a top breeder, i have worked in rescue kennels and i have seen plnty of nice dogs in both. however i personally would advice you against breeding to the akc standard because i dont think they have the dogs best interest at heart. the doxie was bred to hunt underground and be able to run all day, take a look at todays show doxies, do they look like a dog that could take on a large animal and win? nope they (to me) have been ruined by the breed standard, the same as is happening to my own favourite breed, the border collie. reduced now to not much more than an ball of black and white fluff, not the lean tough dog that could work the hills all day and think for itself. but say you go ahead and breed anyway do you; know of a good breeder from whom you can purchase a brood bitch? if so do you trust them? does said breeder test for the myriad of genetic defects afflicting the breed? will they give you proof that they have the desired results from these tests? can you read a pedigree? you need to make sure you can do that so that you can choose a stud who isnt related, and excells in the places where your bitchs isnt as strong. are you able to travel to meet the stud dog in time for the correct phase in your girls cycle? will you be ok with the fact your girl simply may not like the dog you have chosen and the trip may have been in vain. are you able to take the time off work to rear a litter of puppers, and begin training and socialisation, right up to the point where the last pup goes to its new home? at least 8 weeks. are you able to take back one of your pups at a moments notice at any time in that dogs life regardless of the reason it is being returned? this happens alot, trust me. if more breeders actually took responsibility for the dogs they bring into this world there would be far fewer in the shelters. you breed it, you take ultimate responsibility for it for the rest of its life, thats the deal. can you afford (i'm not assuming anything here, but it is a legit question) the cost of an emergency c section at 3.30 on a bank holiday morning cos trust me if a bitch is gonna need one she'll need it when it is most expensive. can you afford the cost of the stud fee, or if the stud owner chooses pick of the litter, can you hand the pup over even if it happens to be the only one your bitch has? can you afford the vets bills if a whole litter was to be taken sick? do you know how to hand rear puppies in case , gods forbid, you should lose the mother during labour (happens moer than most would care to think about). what if you dont find good homes? can you keep an entire litter until the right homes come along? and not be tempted to sell to just anyone because the pups are 16 weeks old and you need them gone? if you can do all these things, then the next step is; you need to be talking to doxie breeders, lots of em. if you need to ask people on the street who have a doxie, go to the shows, ask ask ask ask. and be prepared to wait. a good breeder will have a waiting list for one of their pups as long as your arm. be prepared to have your entire lifestyle quizzed and quizzed again before you even get to visit the litter. if someone will sell you a pup without asking you loads of question and insisting you visit several times before you take your wee one home, run away!. so in short, no i personally dont agree with breeding for the show ring, but do yourself and the shelters a huge favour; if you're going to do it, do it right
ok, Your right, and for the answer's to all of your question's, the answer is "yes" 100%, and that would be one of my policies, that i would ask ton's of question's and i would even find out if they have vet ref's, cause i don't want someone buying one of my puppies out of impulse, and then the dog wind up without a home, which by the way (i believe ) every dog desrves a good home! And yes, i would keep them, reguardless of how much money someone would offer me to take them off my hand's, if they were not a good person to take care of a dog and have not proven otherwise, i will not sell them my puppies to just anyone and that goes for puppy mills as well! NO WAY.! I dont want to be a part of the problem, and i want to do it right. Im just not some mindless person, wanting to breed a litter for the hell of thinking, {it would be fun!} Im willing to take on anything that comes at me, and the action's and problems that come with it. I would sell my puppies on a spay and or nuetur contract and have the puppies new owner sign. I would also offer that at any time, if the new owner would not be able to keep the puppy, at any time they can bring , him or her back to me, and i will take care of them, instead of the pup ending up in a shelter, and i would make them sign a contract in the affect of that too. So to answer all your questions, yes, i am willing to be totally 100% responsible for my puppies and there welfare, and im willing to spend endless nights and days' caring for sick puppies if that would happen. I have a open home and most of all heart, and i am not one for backing out of something that i did. and my pups would not be without a good home as long as i breath! You did give me a good idea tho, one of my requierments should be for the owners -to -be-" to come and visit the pups, and if they can't visit the pups they have no bissniess owning a dog, if they can't take time out to come see them.. thank you very much, you gave me alot to think about and i hope you understand and believe were i am coming from
i'm glad what i said was of help to you another thing you may wish to think about is to deliver each pup yourself and do a pre home visit before hand. tis easy for someone to say for eg, their yard is fenced, but much better if you can see for yourself!
i would plan on waiting on my girl hand and foot to get her pups out, i use to breed cat's i know they are totally the same, but same concept, but i sucked out their mouths and rubbed them, sometimes the mom is overwhelmed where she cant get to all her pups and ya need to lean a hand
bunjies, great post. I'm printing it out. I have an ADORABLE AKC registered doxie that we just got b/c the couple who owned him needed to get rid of him. He's 5 and he's been a stud before. My husband has someone at work who really wants her little girl to breed with him and I didn't even think twice about it until I just read this post. I just figured it was no big deal, but I don't want anything bad to happen to those little puppies!!
All of my closest childhood friends came from shelters. I have the fondest memories of loving, beautiful old dogs who were there through no fault of their own, given a second chance by me and my family. I'm not a sensitive person, but your ideas actually upset me very briefly. I'm sad you think in this way- my dear friends would have been destroyed if everyone thought like you. Of course a lot of shelter dogs have problems...Look at where they've come from and the lives they've had. Bad breeding, overbreeding and lives of neglect will not generally make good dogs...but there are countless dogs trapped behind bars who would be wonderful companions. I knew 3 of them. You need to rethink.
