The Occupy Wall Street Movement makes me feel good...It gives me hope. The odd thing is I don't know what goals they are hoping to achieve. I don't think I really need to know to have some hope. They have a few clear messages that I appreciate. People are sick of greed, they are sick of government lies and mismanagement. They are everyman/woman/child. I see all races, ages, genders and faith systems. I would feel good in that crowd.

So how is this a random thought? Cause it dawned on me that I haven't heard much from the teabag bunch. The extremists of any flavor seem to be caught off guard by this great, full-flavor American brew thats pouring through our streets. Cops are doing their best to hang on to their status as pigs. This is fun to watch and even out here in the hills and woods of nowhere southern illinois people are talking. Tomorrow I'll try to find the nearest group of OWS and add my fraction to the 99%.

Anybody else see this as promising or should I up my meds and go back into the woods?

At the start of my adult life attending protest gatherings helped shape the course of my life. Now as an elder it feels comforting to see this mix of people out in the streets. We the people need to reclaim our values. Greed is very ugly and we need to all examine our personal mirrors as well as our nations image.

i have a feeling a lot of them don't know either...

i haven't heard much from anybody on this subject. if i didn't come to HF, i probably wouldn't even know it was happening. it's like someone's trying to keep it a secret or something..

anyway, it's nice to see people actually getting up and doing something, but i seriously doubt that anything will change because of this.

It's good to see people awakening and rubbing the sleep from their eyes.

All I see is a bunch of unwashed morons banging bongos. Not saying those are the only types there, but it's mostly young idealistic leftists who don't know much about anything other than following the mob like the good collectivists they are.

I don't believe these protests are real or even remotely grassroots.... no fucking way. They are funded with big money just like the Tea Party, except there is probably even more money behind these protests thanks to people like George Soros and his ilk. These protests are too well-orchestrated to not have any major backing, and the whole idea for the protests came from Adbusters, a phony anti-corporate rag backed with Soros money.

Useful idiots, I say. The lot of them. They're playing right into the hands of those they believe they're opposing.

If your opinion of the protest movement is based on what you're seeing on TV, reading in the newspapers, and hearing about on the radio then you're seeing what the corporate media wants you to see- in order that you formulate the opinion you're holding and would be less likely to speak out against abuse of power on the part of the police.

I'm not saying that is how YOU'D react, but those sharing your view that "they're just a bunch of morons making noise" will be far more likely to turn a blind eye on violating their civil rights and free speech. Divide and conquer.

There are some who fit your characterizations- enough to where it is easy to use them to characterize the whole movement. I've heard lists of demands that I'm not 100% on board with but I hesitate to attack them because my own views are more than a bit slanted- and besides, whether or not someone is fully up to speed on the issues, they bothered to get out and add to the numbers... that alone is something- it's progress off the living room couch and game console.

I have very little doubt that some of the more outlandish demands could be coming from establishment plants- Trojan Horse "protesters" whose real job is to assist in propagandizing the general population into being supportive of more stringent measures to deal with a segment of society that the powers that be would like for the public to see as troublemakers and terrorists That way, when a couple end up getting shot dead by police or National Guardsmen people will be able to tolerate that because after all, they brought it on themselves, right?

Divide and conquer. My sense is that you may have been played by the corporate media yourself.

Well, I think I am pretty good at seeing through the propaganda, and I realize there are certain media outlets that fall at different ends of the contrived left/right spectrum whose job it is to demonize the protesters. Well, like you said, it's about divide and conquer, because these protests are clearly being made into the Tea Party of the left, both by the media and the special interest groups lining up behind the protests. Like the Tea Party, its members either don't know or don't care about who's funding their movement and for what aims. So now we have the Tea Party promoting neocon filth like Sarah Palin, and we have the OWS protesters promoting bigger government and socialism, all with the approval of George Soros; one of the richest, most diabolical people in the world. Fuck, even Obama and Nancy Pelosi have gotten behind the protesters, which should say SOMETHING, and not just the obvious fact that politicians will say anything their constituents want to hear.

All I know is that ALL movements are co-opted once they become large enough, if they aren't being manipulated from the beginning. And with the size and scope of these protests, I can say I am more than just a little bit suspicious about who and what is behind all this. So even if these protests began with honest intentions, it doesn't mean that is still the case. That's why I refuse to join a movement and let my individualistic voice be part of a collective that can at any point strangle itself, deliberately or by mere chance.

Perhaps but ya gotta be able to express a dissenting view. I don't agree with the opinion but from seeing some of what is covered about the protests in the news I can see how one might harbor some distaste.

The opinion was not an attack on anyone here- it shows how the OWS movement is registering with some.

Sure there are a few whackos in every crowd but NECN interviewed one group who of people who recently lost their homes and you couldn’t help but feel sympathy for them and understand their pent-up anger with the whole housing debacle.

BTW: They’re already preparing to campout all winter at Dewey square
... although I suspect the crowds will thin out considerably after the first snowstorm [IMG]

^^this seems rather defeatist. sure, movements get co-opted, but that's how the agenda of a movement gets promoted. the way I see it, THE PEOPLE HAVE REASON TO BE PISSED OFF AND IT'S A DAMN GOOD THING THEY ARE.

I can't speak for the administrator but I like reading varying opinions as long as they aren't personally attacking.

I think when someone calls people, or groups of people, derogatory names, etc. it only weakens whatever statement they are trying to make.

sure, i have sympathy and I feel bad, but thats where it ends for me.

most of the tents or the majority of what i've seen, tarps, won't survive a boston winter. it's still really warm out for mid october - they're lucky. when the freezing rain comes, and the wind from off the ocean comes over that area, they'll be gone.

It's a good thing people are angry about something other than their baseball team losing, but not if their anger is being misdirected and can be possibly used against them/us in the long run.

The OWS protesters are protesting the wrong fucking things. The overwhelming majority don't even know who they're mad at. Oh, but it sure feels good to be part of something BIG, dunnit??
