I have not really been on this website since high school, but recently I came on to see what you guys are listening to and watching and I was kinda disturbed by what I found. Almost all the posts in the music and movie forums talk about mainstream entertainment, i.e. Rolling Stones, Pink Floyd, or for movies Half Baked, The pest. While mainstrean in and of itself cannot be considered bad, one must note that these sources of entertainment really have no other goal but to profit. YOU ARE A TARGET. Maybe Pink Floyd or the Doors had something to say in the 60's, "Break on through", but that is no more. Now these bands, or whoever controls the rights to their songs, make compilations of the same old songs to continue exploiting, what in the beginning was a social revolution but what is now, simply a commodity. There is so much good stuff out there: songs and movies that really say things, but remain unknown because they do not "play the game", they do not sell their ethical souls in order to be recognized by big names. I encourage you to look for the underground whever you can, for those of you disallussioned by the constant steam of crap on the airwaves, take heart. Check out these bands The Weakerthans The Shins The Microphones Over the Rhine Pedro the Lion The Decemberists The French Kicks Neutral Milk Hotel Bright Eyes and Muse (already kinda mainstream) Joseph Arthur Starflyer 59 There is a slight Christian influence among a few of the artists But have no fear you will not be preached to. And for movies, check out independant labels, I personally enjoy French cinema. One last note, I am living in Grand Rapids right now and there is this amazing independant radio station out here www.wyce.org check it out, it changed my life. -Take care
its cool that u have found an alternative to whats considered mainstream, (altho whats mainstream and what isnt tends to change according to your tastes and culture..), but whats wrong in likin somethin that u consider mainstream? why would it affect u?
