So I plan on dreading soon, I don't want to use any kinds of shampoo mainly cause dread shampoos are just to expensive for me. I know baking soda is a cheap and residue free way of cleaning your hair, I've heard it can dry your hair out if you use it to much just wondering peoples knowledge on this,
also is apple cider vinegar ok as well or should I just use baking soda only?

Hi M3z, Iv'e Been Using BS For Just Over Two Years And I Think It's *as they say*

The Best Thing Since Sliced Bread...[IMG]

I Put Half A Table Spoon In A 1.25 Litre Coke Bottle With A Hole Drilled In The Cap.

Maybe It Just Suits My Skin Type But I Have No Itch, Dandruff, Oilynes

Or Dried Out Hair, In Fact I Wish I'd Discovered It ** Years Ago, And It

Costs $3-00 For 6 Months Supply...:).

    Cheers Glen.

EDIT:- Just Realised I Didn't Answer Your Question..[IMG]..I Wash Every Day In Summer,

And Every Second Or Third In Winter, As Long As Your Dreads Dry Out Compleatly

Between Washes There Is No Problem With Mould Or Smell...:)

Ok thank you so much for the information :D
I read that the apple cider vinegar can be good for a conditioner, but I'm not sure if its necessary once I start dreading or not. obviously you do fine without it though :)

Apple cider vinegar is good for your scalp to, and it also helps if you have dandruff.
I use BS once a week (2 tablespoons in 1 gallon of water + I add some oils) and give my dreads a soak.
I also use ACV diluted in water about twice a month or so.

It does no harm to your hair or scalp so you can use it everyday if you want to.

Did you do it at least for 2 weeks before you gave up on it?

Baking soda and ACV is the way to go. I use oils also. I use rosemary, tea tree, and lavender.

when i am washing with baking soda, i wash about every three days. every other day in the summer. i also usually add tea tree oil. i've never had problems with the bs drying out my hair, but i know everyone has different results with it. i only do an acv once in a while/when i feel like my hair could use it. i would wait a while before doing the acv when you start out, because it conditions it can discourage knotting.
you might wanna try it out before you start to dread and see what you think.

    what bean said.

i dont use "baking soda" cause it makes my hair soft & undoes any knots. just use standard shampoo.

I use BC to wash my hair, though I really dont measure out how much I put in the 1/2 gal milk jug. It feels good and makes my head tingle! I only wash my hair about once every week or week and a half, and I do not use the ACV rinse because I cant stand the smell of that stuff.

I agree start out light. I use an acv rinse probably more than most people cause i have thin hair and it really helps with thickening it but it has deff discouraged knotting :(

P.s. for those who hate the smell of acv, oils smell great and you wont smell the vinegar at all.

I don't believe the smell of vinegar should be a problem in the first place, if you rinse your hair out good then it doesn't stay in your hair.
