Those of you old enough to have a career, or are on the path to getting one soon, what is it? what do you do?

i'm in my last year of high school now, and i still have no clue what i wan't to do... i'm probably the laziest unmotivated person i know, theres litteraly no job or career (that i'm aware of) that interests me...

my grades aren't that good either, on average i get about 50-60% in a course... and i failed math twice or so, so... i don't think i can really get into university, i'm not stupid, i'm just really unmotivated and have a different perspective on society then most people around here...

so, i would just like some suggestions, on some decent paying careers, that don't need university (unless you think i can get into one?) I'm not really interested in construction or any of that work really... i am a bit interested in computers, except i'm not the best... but i do like writing, but writers don't really make money... who buys books now a days? haha..

i just wan't a path to follow, something in mind, that way i'm not just sleeping in all day once i graduate, and living at home with my mom until i'm 30...

*EDIT* I would also love to travel places... i'm always tempted to just pack up my bags when i graduate and go live in some odd random place in the world that i've never been to... but unfortinutly that is quite unrealistic... so, i love to travel and write, i'm also more of a creative artsy person, not mathematical or scientific.. any suggestions?

Follow what you're passionate about and practice daily. If you like to write, write every day. If you like to travel, get a job and save money to travel. Write about your travels. One day you'll wake up with a full collection of writings. Find publishing outlets. People still read books. People still read magazines and people certainly read travel blogs, which could potentially earn you money.

Don't worry about it - I am 100% sure you won't stay unmotivated. Just try it - you can't, trust me. It's impossible. You will see something you desire and go after it, whether it's money or a girl or a house. What your mind comes up with now and decides upon as a 'career' is the smallest factor in what you will do with your life.

But money is important, i would like to be a writer but they make no money... and i don't want to be living with my parents forever, i'd rather move out once i graduate... but i can't if i don't have a job, don't go to university, and have no money...

i can't see myself having an actual stable job or career, i don't like people telling me what to do so i wouldn't want a boss, and i'd rather just work whenever...

there are times when my goals are to just literally graduate, then go 'move' to downtown vancouver (i live near vancouver) and just go live on the streets for a while... i know most people wan't OFF the streets, but... i think it would be an experience? thats what i mean, i don't want what most people wan't... so... i don't have an idea of what i could possibly do as a career...

i have crappy grades, and no future plan... so i don't see how i'm supposed to be sucessful... everyone i know has plans, they already have their universities picked out :/

So get a job right out of high school. Not a career, but a job. Wait tables for a few years. Move out of your parents, save some money, travel while you're still working a flexible enough schedule to allow it. You'll figure everything else out later.

I don't know what you mean by writers make no money. Small time journalists make at least enough to live modestly. If you're looking to live better than modestly, you're going to have to come up with some ambition and plans.

I suppose thats a good idea, but i don't want to be 40 and still working at some fast food place or waiting tables... like, where would i go from there? if i decide i wan't to go to colledge or university i'm most likely not going to when i'm in my 30's, or late 20's even...

and what do you mean by journalist? like... writing for a newspaper? I don't like writing things about actual stuff, like... doing research and whatnot, i like making stories, and being creative, and being able to write about anything i wan't, are there any jobs like that out there? that you know of

university if a rip off anyways

find your motivation, that's key. i have motivational issues as well - i think from smokin weed all the time.

if you've got the motivation to do something, and enjoy what it is you're trying to do - you can't be stopped

I'm currently paused on the path to a career in software/web development.

I just got a grocery stock job and plan on saving up money until I am comfortable enough to invest in further schooling, because my Associates from Community College isn't cutting it on the applications.

Being an unemployed student led to some lack in my possessions and I am currently spending too much to get a bank account (but hopefully next paycheck..)

I can't decide whether I really care about this career anymore. I dream of making money through investments, gambling, or something more creative and not needing a conventional job.

I wanted to be a writer, and still love the idea of being a creator/entertainer, but I can't seem to motivate myself towards that end anymore either.

I dunno. There's always the chance I'll still stumble onto something I'm really satisfied with; but for now, I'm happy with my job, and can't wait to get my bank account =P

same with me, i love writing because i love to entertain people, i used to want to be an actor when i was little, but i realized i'm much to shy for that, writing is just a good way to be expressive and entertain people at the same time... i've written quite a few short stories, and some of them have had people in tears (they were sad, touching stories) so i think thats a good sign that my writing is somewhat decent, which is why i would love to pursue a career in that, i just don't see many opportunities for any creative writing careers unfortinutly...

With your attitude I'd be willing to bet you don't have to worry about getting stuck in one job

lol well..you don't want to go to university, you don't wanna get stuck at a job that doesn't require schooling...you're in quite a catch 22.

Start trying to get your short stories published now. You're not going to get paid at first, but getting published anywhere, even an unpaying source, even a webzine nobody reads, will be something to put on your resume. That way, if you were to submit a story later down the road to a literary magazine that pays quite well, you will already have credibility.

I used to blame weed for my lack of motivation too, then I realized it was just me. If you smoke weed and sit on the couch and watch tv, it will leave you unmotivated. If you smoke weed before doing activities, it will give you even more motivation.
