St Paul's showdown - Police finalise plans to use force if necessary as chaplain becomes second cathedral cleric to resign.

On Saturday protesters are holding a "Sermon on the Steps" and have extended an invitation to the cathedral dean, the Right Graeme Knowles, and the bishop of London, the Right Rev Richard Chartres. The two churchmen have said they will be outside St Paul's to engage with activists on Sunday.

With senior officials at St Paul's apparently intent on seeking an injunction to break up the protest, the director of the influential religious thinktank Ekklesia, Jonathan Bartley, said the cathedral's handling of the protest had been a "car crash" and predicted more high-profile resignations from the Church of England.

The canon chancellor of St Paul's, Giles Fraser, and the Rev Fraser Dyer, who works as a chaplain at the cathedral, have already stepped down over the decision to pursue legal action to break up the camp.

Christian groups who have publicly sided with the protesters include one of the oldest Christian charities, the Fellowship of Reconciliation, and the oldest national student organisation, the Student Christian Movement, Christianity Uncut, the Zacchaeus 2000 Trust and the Christian magazine Third Way. In addition, London Catholic Worker, the Society of Sacramental Socialists and quaker groups have offered their support.

A statement by the groups said: "As Christians, we stand alongside people of all religions and none who are resisting economic injustice with active nonviolence. The global economic system perpetuates the wealth of the few at the expense of the many. It is based on idolatrous subservience to markets. We cannot worship both God and money."

Wow! Right on!

In the '60s there were many clergy who sided with the protesters, some like Daniel Berrigan got arrested and sentenced to many years in Jail. Berrigan was a Jesuit and activist. Berrigan even made it on to the FBI's Ten Most Wanted List, as he fled from imprisonment.

You REALLY should read more about what this one Priest did for the anti-war movement in the 60s. He's a true American Patriot, who fights hard for freedom from tyranny and an end to war and the arms race.

And he's still active at 90! Here he is getting arrested at the UN in 2006.

The church bells rang, the choir prepared to march, and well-dressed churchgoers walked up the long pathway to stately St. Paul’s Cathedral.

The only thing out of place on a fine Sunday morning was a rag-tag collection of tents at the side of the church.

London’s downtown flagship Anglican church has offered a safe haven for members of Occupy London, who — in an apparent splinter in the group over the weekend — don’t want to remain in Victoria Park after eight days of protesting. That put sleepy, camp-grizzled protesters next to elderly church patrons.

“I think the church is trying to bring the church down to the people, instead of raising the people up to the church,” said James Hobson (churchgoer).

St. Paul’s Rev. Kevin Dixon has made fighting poverty and bridging the gap between the rich and the poor one of his priorities since taking over leadership of the church last year.

“With all I have been saying since I got here, what kind of hypocrite would I be if I said no to them?” Dixon said

Both the church and the local authority, the City of London Corporation, have launched legal action in the hope of clearing scores of tents from a pedestrianized square and footpath outside the cathedral.

That prompted a part-time chaplain, Fraser Dyer, to resign last week. Dyer said he was "embarrassed" by the decision to take legal action to try to evict the protesters.

some urls for occupy london stock exchange and i would like to add that i made an incorrect statement in a previous post which i can't find right now, so i'll correct myself here for now... i said that we went with 100% consensus... well that's a load of balony... i just hadn't seen any blocks until the other day... consensus can be reached with blocks but it is a slightly longer process, back and forth... the person/s blocking the proposal have to make a good argument as to why they are blocking, and the argument has to be reasonable for the block to be allowed...

Police tear down Trafalgar Square tents

Police have torn down tents pitched by anti-capitalist protesters who had briefly set up camp in London's Trafalgar Square.

Activists moved into the historic square on Wednesday in an offshoot protest of the Occupy movement whose supporters have been camping outside St Paul's Cathedral in the capital for weeks.

Well done, we're each a very small part of the 99%.

I must say I agree with Captain Poverty, but why bring it up? How can we make a significant dent in world poverty when a load of ignorant, greedy cunts sit their holding the worlds wealth, pleasuring themselves with diamond vibrators?

Hopefully, 1st world countries will be the crutches of the 3rd world countries, but currently our legs are still broken - and we're still using those crutches.
We need to sort our own shit out before we fuck up our whole planet and everyone on it.

Occupy London has taken over a huge abandoned office block in the borough of Hackney belonging to the investment bank UBS in a move it describes as a ‘public repossession.’

Overnight on Thursday, a dozen activists from the Occupy London, campaigners for social and economic justice as part of the global fight for real democracy, gained access to the building and secured it, giving them a legal claim on the space.

went inside the building today... it is awesome we have toilets and kitchens and a roof garden and loads of large and small spaces/rooms... we have internet and puters... it's huge! of course there will probably be legal action, but that could take months, and could fail, for them... it's going to be a sweeeet christmas :2thumbsup:

i think that must've been in the last section... i'd heard they had a bit of trouble back there.... the police had sectioned us into three parts... front and middle sections got little shoves, and police kept stopping and starting the protesters... hemming most of us in, which had the effect of pissing people off.... but we were and still are determined to remain peaceful...
