this morning, i posted on Facebook: "the veterans dont need a holiday.. they have enough rewards and incentives. wheres the holiday for minimum-wage employees?"

the last comment was obviously a joke, but i was surprised at how many people were so extremely appalled by that. so badly that the expression woulda been the same as if i murdered someone. my dad called about 7 minutes after i posted saying how much of a disgrace i am and how shameful i should feel.
i got multiple responses from family members giving me lectures on how i'm so ungrateful for what the soldiers have done for me, how stupid i am for not knowing my american history, and how childish i am for having this opinion. literally.

i made sure that that one comment was a joke, that it was clear that it wasn't an attack on the individuals that were in the military, and that it was against the general romanticized image of the military.

my step-mom (which we are now on a non-talking basis, this all was the cherry on top of my anger), told me "Kyle, with maturity comes wisdom, and in your case I hope it comes sooner than later. You are very misinformed, misguided, mislead, naive, and your ideology frightens me."

i wanted to inquire about everyone's thoughts. i want to know if I'm not completely psycho despite the 4 'likes' i got for my posting, and what i can do to portray the right image that i am not a child.
my main dilemna for the past weeks has been all the adults in my life have been lecturing me in condescending ways, and i cannot stand it anymore. I'm not a child, i just hold different viewpoints and opinions than them. i am fucking sick of it actually.

i was gonna post my whole fcebook discussion but it was too much. ask if you need details.

    i need advice.

why is it not nice to say that? only because they disagree? if thats the case, the past four years i've been feeling offended every single day. is that acceptable?

i find it funny that my offensiveness is only based on fundamental political disagreement, while i'm now offended that my step-mom would insult me based on it. calling me lazy, stupid, naive, and misinformed.

pride in my opinion only accounts for the actions that you personally have done. to be proud of the military, to pay thanks to the war is so idiotic to me.

You don't have to pay thanks to the war but at least respect the kids who are dying for your freedom

how many soldiers actually die or are hurt from joining the military?
and i didn't have the choice to be born in america and be grown in it's culture, i don't feel like i need to pay ownage to these beliefs , especially ones that only glorify war even more.
and especially when i think most wars that the US goes in are purposefully.

Prominent veteran, Secretary of State Colin Powell said "The First Amendment exists to insure that freedom of speech and expression applies not just to that with which we agree or disagree, but also that which we find outrageous..

i would LOVE to. unfortunately i don't have the money, not many people at all my age would be able to move.
but still, in any country i am in, i wouldn't support the military, but why are people so moronic to feel offended by that when at the same time they'll say they believe in free speech, call me immature, and all because its a sensitive subject for them.

the main thing about this thread i guess is how do i deal with these adults that treat me childishly? how can i prove something to them? i feel invisible, and i cannot have an opinion at all because of everything, including my financial situation.

I've only of you for a few minutes and you already sound like a very spoiled child. It's not your ideals its how and when you say it that show your immaturity.

i'll accept that even though i may disagree right now.
specifically, how do i sound immature? and do you think if i held myself differently, people would have responded more mature in return? and do you think that only because of my spoken concern of sounding childish?
the whole thing is solely political, I'm just trying for them to understand me. i won't change my political perspective anytime soon, but still, how do i deal with parents and such that look down on me.
my opinion is obviously coming at a cost.

Sometimes you and your family and the people you love offend each other politically. The people who will give you shit about it are the people that want to argue the side.

My mother is religious and facebook has taught me that her brother is a tea party er

The thought of their politics makes me like them a little less than I love them

Just part of having a family

    Listen to your mom.
We have Vets and current military personel
    And then we have
    stupid policys and war
They are actually seperate things, remember that.
My personal belief is that their rewards and incentives arent what people think and that they are getting a screw job in the end.
While im at it.....Dont be taking your hatred for war out on Vets and Personel, they arent the policy makers they are stuck in the middle.

Your post was insensitive to veterans, who have had this day of acknowledgement for almost a century.

Not that I don't have similar insensitivities. A drunk driver crashes into a tree and kills himself and I want to cheer. A person who keeps a vicious dog that is a threat to others in the community gets mauled and killed by that dog makes me want to cheer also. But, I would not go to their funerals and cheer in front of their family and friends.

Ppl realize that the grunts who go in harms way risking life and injury should be recognized for their valor. And, altho most wars we have entered in my lifetime were unnecessary wastes of resources and life, and causing undue suffering of our soldiers and the soldiers and civilians in foreign lands, some like WWII were necessary for us to engage. It really was a war against evil.

So we do acknowledge the sacrifice of Veterans on this one day. It would be nice if you could differentiate your dislike of the military/industrial complex that causes wars from the unfortunate soldiers who must abide by the decisions of those in charge.

Many veterans are of recent wars in the Middle East and went there of their own free will. Don't forget that the veterans of my era and before were forced to go to war. It was the backlash of Vietnam that ended our slave army in the U.S.

But also don't forget that you were required by law to register for the draft at 18 (whether you actually did or not) and if there wasn't a standing army of volunteers, they could just as easily try to reenact conscription, where you would have a 'choice' to become a soldier, a prisoner or an expatriate.

Y'know, I am a veteran and was looking for a place to post my little blurb I wrote today. Guess I'll tack it on here.

I am a Veteran for Peace

I never saw combat - avoided going to Vietnam but still someone had to fight the "Cold War." And, useless wars go on - like the protracted bogging down in Afghanistan. Yes, after their participation in the terrorist attacks on 9-11-01 we shoulda gone in there and reduced the Taliban strongholds with an air strike, shoulda sent a message that ANY nation found complicit with terrorists would be dealt swift retribution. Obviously I am not a complete pacifist - war is sometimes necessary to defend a nation but did we not learn anything from the Soviet Union in Afghanistan?

Same for Iraq, a useless war, the folly of Duh'bya Bush, our arrogant, clueless commander-in-chief of the moment. Had he served in war instead of stateside, a privilege of the politically connected, he might have known the horrors of going to war. Sure Saddam Hussein was a tyrant but that is the kind of leader that some backward, feudal/tribal nations need. Has Iraq fared any better since the removal of one tyrant and the chaos caused by the vacuum?

Some of us, very few unfortunately, saw this coming and in March 2003 protested publicly but to no avail. (I was at that protest in Miami - got my pic in the background as the fotog was going for the big-breasted girl with the sign)

Speaking of tyrants, the United States is living under the tyranny of economic serfdom where the 99% of the poorest are victims of the 1% who hold the wealth and buy the government which protects its interests. This is not right and when the economy collapsed and ppl were losing their jobs & homes to the greed of corporations which were still making profit and rewarding the corporate miscreants who caused this problem, they rose up and "Occupied Wall Street" a movement that spread around the world.

In the Occupy Oakland protests, the police did a heavy handed assault on ppl peaceably redressing their grievances and 24-year-old Scott Olsen, a veteran of two tours in Iraq was shot in the head by a tear gas canister fired by a pig on Oct. 25, 2011 and seriously wounded with a fractured skull.

Scott, a member of Veterans for Peace was participating in the Occupy Movement because he felt strongly about the economic inequality. This veteran became a rallying point and on October 28, 2011, I joined Veterans for Peace.

I wore my new identity on my T-shirt this Veterans' Day. There may be a new cause for us old vets - to fight our battles against oppression here at home where it matters.
