While a lot of working class people support the occupy movement, directly or indirectly, many do not. It’s reminiscent of the hardhats vs. hippies skirmishes during the 60s. A lot are pleased that many of the camps are being cleared out by riot police.

Some of the gripes I’ve heard are,

    They’re not accomplishing anything.
I’ve told them they’re bringing a lot of attention to the issue of corporate greed and that’s a good start.

They’re a bunch of naïve kids.
My reply is it’s naïve to think the economy will improve on its own or can be solved in the voting booth.

They’re a bunch of drug addicts and bums.
Such encampments naturally attract addicts and homeless, but they make up just a small part.

    They need to get jobs.
Jobs are hard to come by.
They need to take what they can get! Drive a cab, wash dishes, work in a gas station!
A lot of Americans are working at jobs like that. They used to have higher-paying jobs in manufacturing but that sector has dried up. I’m concerned that I might have to take a job like that before I can retire. For that matter I’m concerned that I might not be able to retire!

Anyway, the occupy movement is in its infancy. So a lot of the camps have been cleared out and shut down, that’s not going to put a stop to something this big. It is in fact a movement. As time goes on and if things don’t improve the numbers will grow. Come springtime I predict that Occupy will be back bigger than ever.

I'm wondering if some of us should start moving underground, as covert backup. From the looks of things, it may not be safe to publicly support this for long, and those of us who have others to protect may need a way to help as well.

I wouldn't say it's that bad, but if you want to get into a debate with someone who's opposed to the occupy movement, have your argument ready.
