Abandoned from a number of key representatives and pressed by both domestic and international opinion, no longer in possess of a number of loyal representatives large enough to allow him to stand a confidence vote, silvio berlusconi resigned from PM yesterday , 21:45 local, in front of president mr. Napolitano. Scores of hecklers waiting for him chanted, cursed and even performed an appreciable choir of Haendel's «Hallelujah» when sure that he actually surrendered his office.

President mr. Napolitano (often accused of being crucial to berlusconi's political survival with his stubborn refusal to take action against utterly questionable laws and the shameful, obvious corruption of representatives from the opposition by mr Berlusconi which allowed him to survive the defection of the allied far right wing party A.N. ) will probably commission mr. Mario Monti , twice ex european commissioner and famed economist, to form a new Cabinet. mr Napolitano nominated mr. Monti Senator days ago. The Italian political gotha was forced into this solution by the disgraceful result of three years of Berlusconi government which saw the spread between italian and german bonds raise from 29 points during the last left wing government to the peak of 575 points in the last hours.

The fate of the government which is being formed in these hours relies on the good will and sense of responsibility of different parties and groups inside the italian parliament so its chances of birth and political survival in the short term look miserly at this point.
