Fear and Loathing in Las Veags If there's ever been a film made that accurately depicts what it's like to trip, this is the one. And I'm not just talking about the visuals (though those are groovy too). I'm talking about the shit that goes on in your mind when you trip. Remember when they go to that circus-like place? It's all noisy and "happy" and full of these straight people doing straight things, and Duke (Johnny Depp) makes that great observation that even the most seasoned acid tripper couldn't be prepared for something like this. He even goes so far as to say "This is what America would be like had the Nazis won the war." To me that's fuckin' golden. That's the part about tripping that people in films always miss.
Fantastic planet creeped the hell out of me, but it was fun to watch. Man Bites Dog Les Visiteurs LSD Riders
Heavy Metal from 1981 weird trippy film just dont do acid before or during when you watch it... lol.....
Nor has anyone mentioned Naked Lunch. Criterion put out an amazing DVD transfer that oozes out of the screen on hallucinogens. Plus, my wife, a novice tripper and not a big reader, admitted that the only reason she understood it, was being on mushrooms at the time. Also in full agreement with gunison on Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas. Really nails the feeling of serious drugging. And i find all Terry Gilliam's movies have that stoner edge (even the Fisher King). 1408 was an awesome allegory of a cynic's bad trip, but rough viewing while under the influence (glad to see it mentioned once). Second best King adaption. And for trippy King adaptation's: The Shining (deeper than you would even believe without drugs. Any late era Kubrick (From 2001 thru EWS) really creates the perfect psychedelic visual environment, while never losing the intellectual logic of his mise-en-scene. Thumbs up to the Bakshi fans, who's rotoscoping inspired another fav of mine and others here, A Scanner Darkly. Dying for copies of his old 'Mighty Mouse' episodes. They were awesome. Final nods to: The Prisoner (60's British 'sort of a sequel' to Secret Agent Man, and still pretty trippy) Fantasia/Dumbo/Alice In Wonderland and other great early Disney fare Vulgar (hard to find, but great) The Doom Generation (everything should cost $6.66) anything Aronofsky (from Pi thru Black Swan... all hallucinogenic) Nothing But Trouble (best if u know nothing about it before watching it) if you can deal w subtitles: 8 1/2, almost anything by Ingmar Bergman and then there's always the films of Stan Brackhage, Kenneth Anger, Maya Deren, and even Dali & Bunuel's Un Chien Andalou for some non-narrative mind bending. and I'm sure I'm forgetting some I'd love to regale. It's late.
almost forgot Caro & Jeunet... City of Lost Children is completely bugged out. As was Delicatessen. Their flair for weird even made Alien 4 bearable.
