you know what these kids gotta do. give them a nice hard kick to the nuts. teach kids not to be afraid to fight back. If a kid worries about being molested by a coach tell the kid to stick together with other groups of kids and never to be alone with just the coach. If a coach is suspected of doing such activity now days kids got cell phones with video recording. maybe try to get some video evidence or something.

now also while horrible situations like this do happen you also gotta remember there are shit head kids out there who make stuff up or over exaggerate situations. so you can't blame the coaches right away without evidence just cause the kid said he did it. the best thing to do is tell kids to never spend time alone with a coach if the coach is not trusted.

Here's another angle to further complicate this mess. Some kids have such lonely, empty lives that they are willing to tolerate some of the things that happen to them because the violator makes them feel good, gives them something that passes for love/affection. In treatment I have heard people say "I didn't want to turn him in because he's the only person who ever treated me nice." As tragic as that sounds it's a trade-off some kids felt they had to make. It places no blame on the victim but is a statement of just how tragically lonely and empty their lives are. The only thing they have to barter with is their body. Explotation in the guise of salvation.

In looking for explanations of how this stuff happens it just gets more and more complex as you start peeling back the layers. This will not be resolved with anything so simple as arming kids with skills and knowledge. Neither will increasingly harsh punishment be a deterient for abusers. There has to be some huge vacuum in a mans life for him to seek sexual comfort from a child. If there ever exists a resolution for this problem it will come through a communal or societal effort. At least that will be so for most cases. There are some cases that simply represent untouchable evil though I believe those to be few and far between. When such a case occurs it gets such media and headline play that it's easy to believe all cases are the same. They are not.

Oh I guess that was true in ancient Greece as well then...Kinda funny we co-opted many of the core values of our system of democracy from those prawn-suckers...
I could easily make comparisons between the the Athenians athletic idolatry and ritual abduction to college football...;)

Don't misunderstand me yarapario, you have a very compassionate and thoughtfull viewpiont on this, but what with the catholic church's pedo's being outed almost daily, and now this, it just seems to me the problem is much more pervasive than you are portraying.

I didn't mean to suggest it isn't more pervasive. Many people who work the field suggest that the number of reported case represent a fraction of the actual incidents. Who knows but I'm sure that the occurence is far more frequent than anyone would want to imagine. I suspect there are a lot of empty lives out there who prey on children in one way or another...and have done so since we as humans jumped out of trees an set up camp as Homo Sapiens.

I'm not sure what you mean by the Greek reference. That the Athenians athletic idolatry and ritual abduction to college football have parallels makes sense but maybe I'm missing your point.

I think it's valuable for people to have these kinds of discussion though because the problemhas been too long ignored and misunderstood.

Yes you are probably right about that.

I guess that really is my only point... and thank's for the understanding on the Greek thing. I really didn't want to get into that anyway, but it came up recently so I couldn't help but throw it out there.
