UPDATE 12/4: A class action lawsuit has been filed against Carrier IQ over this issue!

Yes, it's even worse than we thought! Apparently all smart phones are storing data on everything you punch in and reporting it to the service provider who stores it. This article, specifically about the HTC smartphone describes a hidden app that is nearly impossible to completely remove that tracks and stores every phone # you call, every website you visit, every text you send.

And it's installed on every phone running android, and other operating systems have similar software installed to track you.

Now you might ask what does the service provide do with this info. Well, it stores it for secret government contracts (remember this spyware was secret too!). This way the government local or federal can snoop on you without a warrant anytime they choose.

Is this Police State just lovely? Privacy is DEAD in America.

Privacy is dead in just about any developed country, where people readily use electronic devices and are all part of the capitalist machine. The only way to really get around it is to never use any form of electronic communication, which isn't practically possible nowadays.

Wait wait wait, claim down now...if you are using a device to communicate, whether it be through the internet, or a phone line it's ALL being tracked/stored and it has ALWAYS been that way. For the devices to work properly you have to be tracked, because the signal has to know where to go to get to you (or the device you're using to communicate) and it HAS to be stored otherwise you'd only get half or part of the message. This is nothing new, nor is it something to be afraid of. The simple fact that there are literally hundreds of millions of people communicating at anyone point, should be enough cause for comfort because ISP and phone companies simply don't have the people power to personally look through all that data.

Now some ISP & phone companies do keep that data from 6 - 18 months, that could be worrying if you know you're being sought after otherwise RELAX. If you don't wanna be tracked then don't use any form of modern communication but even if you do, you probably have nothing to worry about.

This goes far beyond location tracking. This is storing personal information that no one has a right to automatically store without even asking you or letting you know this app is running.

Well ISPs and phone companies have a unique IP or phone # associated with each user, add that with the fact that if you have a contract with a provider then you've already willfully given your personal information to them -from anything you would see on a driver license to your SS# (for americans). In other words, what else could they want from you? They have everything already.

    Hah.

My ipod is old enough not to have GPS and hasn't had a software update in years, my phone isn't a smartphone and I don't do anything fun or subversive, and all my computers run firewalled linux.

The scary thing is that when I show friends this sort of thing, they really don't give a fuck. At best, they accept that it's not great but try to rationalize it away or joke to make it seem less serious, and say something about how nobody really cares that they smoke pot or have a few girls on the side or whatever. And then they stick their fingers in their ears and go "lalalalalala" when I mention that the problem isn't what happens now, it's the future, where by the time this info is being utilized to it's full invasive potential, we will already have full dossiers on a full fucking generation.

I don't own a smartphone, never really cared for these "advanced" modern phones. I always assumed someone was ease-dropping somewhere but all this is just an extreme invasion of privacy. It only seems to get worse with time now.

You know, the Anglo/American alliance + the Vatican makes good bed flowers when it comes to keeping metal sheep down, the Vatican is there to sever humanity from spirit, leaving the government free to turn the masses into mindless worker drones. It's 1984/THX1138/Clock Work Orange made real!! The future's bright alright.

  16. This doesn't affect me because I don't have a smart phone or anything but knowing that agencies are able to track people and their movements clandestinely makes me so fucking sick.

If you have any mobile phone, it's easy to spot you quite accuratly, and as such, they can tell who you associate with (by proximity), what you do for fun, where you shop, etc. It's very easy. And they obviously know everything said or texted.

If you have an iPhone, you can turn it off by going to Settings> General> About> Diagnostics & Usage. Do it now.

For a new phone with iOS 5, it is turned off by default. But if you have an older one, it might very well be turned on.

For Android, the carriers have installed it in such a way that the user cannot turn it off.

America has lost all its privacy. People think communication increases but we feel more alienated than ever, and to top it all off, now the government is snooping on everybody's business. Its been like this for awhile and will only get worse. Our future seems bleak
