This seems a little out of place compared to many of the more serious threads on this forum, but alas, I didn't know where else to post my frustrations. My hair is ridiculously thick, I can't stand it. It isn't super kinky, I have loose curls, but it is impossible to deal with. The reason it is so frustrating to me is because I am 15 years old, and I still cannot deal with my own hair. My friend recently invited me to an overnight retreat his friends are having in a few months, and at first I said Yes, but as soon as I came home I realized I couldn't.

Since forever, I have always put my long hair in a pony tail because it gets so big and frizzy when its down. My hair is so thick that it takes me forever to find elastics that I can use. The worst part of it is that I cannot effectively put up my own hair. Since I was little my mom has always put up my hair, and even now I have to ask her to do it for me. Many times my friends have asked me to take my hair down since I wear the same hair style from day to day. I considered cutting it shorter, but decided against it, fearing the results (The shorter my hair gets, the curlier it becomes). I can't stand the lack of freedom I have simply because of my hair. I didn't go on a five-day field trip with my class a few years ago because I wouldn't be able to do my hair, and I look to the future and don't know what I am going to do in college.

It's hard when all of the girls I know have thin, thin hair and can wear their hair up or down so easily. I was hoping someone might have some sort of suggestion or help, because I really do want to attend the overnight retreat, and my hair has just been so difficult.

    :) In love,

    Diana

I can totally relate... My hair is thick and obnoxious, as well... Curly too... Blech. I've always wished for stick-straight hair. My boyfriend can't run his fingers through my hair, without hitting a snag. :(

When my hair was long, I used to wear it in ponytails a lot (with three or four elastics going down to keep it in check). I've decided that I look cute with a bob, so I have kept it in that style, for a few years...

For variety, I would twist it: put hair in a ponytail, then split it in half and twist the two down and secure with another ponytail holder at the bottom. It will stay in the twist shape, it looks cool.

Or I would braid it. Again, put it in a ponytail then braid and secure at the bottom. I learned how to French Braid my hair, but that took some muscle conditioning, as my arms would get tired part way through doing it.

I know what you mean about not being able to find elastics big enough for your hair. I always have to buy the biggest clips and accessories I can find (and I still break them, most of the time). I've often considered creating a product line of hair accessories, specifically for people with thick hair...

I also have super thick curly hair that I could do nothing with. I don't know if you are wanting to keep it curly or not, but if you want to straighten it, you should get a ceramic hair straightner. It can literally take my hair from being a massive curly fro to being straight and sleek. Just put a little anti frizz serum in and your good to go for a few days. This really was a blessing for me since I'd always wanted stick straight hair. best of luck :)

biosilk it's a lot but it will thin your hair out and also get long layers and tell the stylist you want them to cut it so it's straighter. I have really wavy hair and since I got it cut it's straight wihtout even blow drying it.

anti-frizz serums, or even that conditioner they throw into homekit hair dyes... it's very strong stuff. Hot wax treatments... basically things that anti-frizz your hair should be helpful. However, that can get expensive... :(

The only things I can think of are getting it thinned when you get it cut, that'll take some of the thickness away, using a hot oil treament (VO5 makes them, get them at osco for a few bucks) and definitely straightening it, get one that really heats up, a ceramic one is the best, and when its drying from the shower you can try braiding it, i dont know if that'd help

I have the exact oppisite problem, my hair is faaaaaaaaaaar to THIN. It won't straighten, and even if I brush it to fast I'll stop pulling out about twice as much hair as I normally would with brushing it. The ONLY thing that I hate about travelling with my school's marching band is I NEVER get to do my hair and always look like death after the show. Not being able to wash my hair for 3 days, not being able to blow dry it, while in the process I'm sweatin like a dog! ICK!

But anti-freeze serum does help. Maybe try Frizz-ease. That helped me at least tame my hair, I'd soak it in my hair and let my hair naturally dry, and it would turn into managable curls. Also, using a curling iron; running it straight through your hair, can help a lot. I've found it a lot easier to use a curling iron to straighten my hair than a straighting iron... If that makes any sense...

Also, use Pantene Pro-V shampoo and conditioner, only use them seperatly instead of the two-in-one kinds. Find a type made for frizzy hair. I use one called "Full and Thick" and it really helps my hair a lot. Good luck :)

I have super thing, straight, flat hair that holds no style or curl for more than 10 minutes. I can't stand it.

My girlfriend has really thick naturally curly hair that I think is just beautiful. I wish I had it. Of course she thinks the same about my hair.

Us women are never happy with the hair we have =P

My advice is for this weekend thing you want to go on have your hair braided into loados of little plats.. decorate it with beads and wraps and keep it like that for a week or so (during this time you can go on your trip and have a great time)

.. or dread lock it :D locks work wonderfully with big thick hair.

Thanks so much to everyone for the advice. :) I actually have frizz-ease shampoo, conditioner, and serum I use everytime I wash my hair. On Sunday I planned on using the only straightener we have after I washed my hair (I don't know if its ceramic or not). Before I could use it, my mom told me that my hair needed to be completely dry or else I would electricute myself (haha who would have thought)...anyway, I ignorantly attempted to blow dry my hair, and well, it was a bit of a disaster, so I ended up washing my hair once more. I wish water didn't conduct electricity so well!! This means I am forced to blow dry my hair, or let it dry naturally (takes hours), and it seems that my hair gets SO frizzy when I blow dry it, the straightner isn't as effective.

I think I will ask to straighten the top layer of my hair the next time I go to the hairdressers because it is the frizziest. Until then, since my hair was cut recently, I think I am going to try to practice putting up my hair and such. So far I can get my hair in a scrunchy at least :)

The retreat, I actually found out, will be a few months away so I have some time before then to try to work with my hair.

    :) In love,

    Diana

I have the same problem.. it's why I only wear one of three styles: bandana, ponytail, or front part back. I have actually broken hairbrushes...

I had a couple of surgeries on my head this year and had to shave a lot of my head to get them done. It's the sections directly behind my ear and kind of under all the rest.. they did shave off quite a bit, but suprisingly, my hair looks BETTER now because it is not so full and poofy. I've had people tell me that they know of women who actually shave the underside of their head for this reason. But I've seen that before, and I dont like it..

I am in your exact same situation..but I kind of just let it go a couple of years ago. It's too much trouble to try to tame something so naturally wild.

I guess the grass is almost always greener on the other side. I have hair to the middle of my back, but it's baby-fine and won't hold curl for anything. I would LOVE to have thick, naturally curly hair! I think it's so beautiful!

Be proud of that mane! ;)

    Hugs...

mine sucks ass too. it is almost exactly like yours, judging by the description, except i have been able to ponytail my own since i was 4. ( a necessity, cosidering that's when it all got bad.) What really works is surprising. don't brush it. comb while it's wet, and only wash it once/twice a week or so. it won't smell, unless you smoke, and things might actually kinda even out. today i combed mine for the first time in 4 weeks, so it required a brush, and now it's a hideous poofy wreck. ponytails=devil. 2 braids and a bandana work fine for me. also, try this- flip your head upside down and grab your hair at the crown of your head.Put a ponytail holder ( not some random flimsy little elastic. i'm talking fabric here!) around your hair once, so it touches your head. then do it again, but only pull the hair 3/4 thorugh. this is what i have been doing and it's goin happy good for me!

:) I am excited because on Saturday morning I was able to straighten my hair when it was already dry...even though it took me three hours, and I needed my moms help to do the very back. I was extremely happy, because I found that if I laid on my bed and leaned my head over the edge I could put my hair in a decent pony tail using an elastic. I even went over my friend's house and spent the night! Haha, it was nice to have thinner hair for a day, although it burned my scalp a little and completely disappeared when I washed my hair again.

I used to wash my hair once or twice a week, but somehow i got into the habit of washing it every dya or every other day. I never actually brush it though, haha I usually comb it before taking a shower and then comb it again while I am in the shower. Thanks for the advice, I have considered, and think I might start putting my hair in a bandana.

    :) In love,

    Diana

well, i combed my hair today. i have discovered a mat so big that it could probably eat my dog. i have been attempting to comb it out for the last 2 HOURS. i'm about a step away from cutting it out, but it's kinda at the top...and towards the front. any suggestions for killing the evil mat from hell? and no, i don't have any detangler, not that it ever helps my hair anyway

to stop the top layer from getting fried put your hair in a clip and only let small sections of it down at a time and blowdry and straighten it with a huge brush and than let a little more hair down and do the same also get a blowdryer with a cold air setting and when all your hair is dry starighten it under the cold air.
