I said in another thread how I'd "fallen off the wagon" for thanksgiving. Previous to that, I'd been meat free for 6-7 months. I was told (I don't remember by whom) that after a week or two, the veg lifestyle would not be so "gassy" and at the very least have less gas than when eating flesh. Cabbage, Brussels sprouts and the like are worse than before and they were pretty bad. Everything has me clearing the room. Any ideas as to why, for me it never got better?
Well it's all relative. If you didn't have much fiber when you were eating meat and have much more, than yes you'll have more gas problems. It's all about fiber, and the veg lifestyle calls for a lot more of it because protein supplements such as beans are high in fiber as well. Beans, nuts, and broccoli always gives me troubles. Limit the fat, it takes so long to digest that it means any carbs you ate after have to sit and wait, while being eaten by bacteria causing gas. If you ate all your carbs through out the day and saved fat for evening meal then your gas problem will go away. Or just focus on getting carbs and skip excess fat, you will get the fat you need from the fruits and vegetables. Whats your daily diet like? Are you eating a lot of cheese, milk, butter?
I think it might be grains. I need to avoid carbs and sugar so eat mostly meat and very few fruit+veggies (no wheat, corn or rice at all), and I don't get any stomach trouble at all. I have "fallen off the wagon" at times and had some days where I lived solely on fruit+veg (but still no grains) and didn't notice stomach problems either, which makes me think it is the grains. It's definitely not fat since I eat tons of the stuff, but when I ate grains I used to remember getting heaps of gas after a big bowl of pasta or breakfast cereal.
I have hemp milk in my coffee. I'm lactose intolerant, so no cows milk or cheese, but can use butter. I use it on toast and some at dinner.
I am in the same boat , so to speak , but i am convinced its the beans , i try to avoid cabbage cause that just makes it worse :ack2: But i do eat alot of carbs , pasta especailly , more than before .It doesnt go away after two weeks though thats for sure .
It takes time to get your body used to your new diet. It will be cleansing out of a lot of bad stuff. I have IBS and am a vegetarian, since I've been eating vegetarian, organic and healthy(no crap candy, good chocolate and baked goods every now and again still though.) It's been a world of difference. Also dealing with my depression has helped my stomach troubles.
All you need to do is get more things like ginger, fennel, licorice root, camommile,& cayenne in your diet. Yogi Egyption Licorice Tea is great. Also real ginger ale is amazing, or ginger tea!! Peppermint is good too. If you start adding some of those things to your diet it should help. I have serious digestive issues, so I self-medicate with these wonderful things.
Make sure you're fully cooking your beans too. Undercooked beans are more likely to cause digestion problems.
Thanks for the tips. I was hoping someone would have some for me. I can't stand regular black licorice, but the rest I will try. I've been craving peppermint for a couple of months now, even in my soaps. I wonder if that's why, because I need it. I'm open to trying just about anything.
That's exactly why you've been craving peppermint. Oh, and the licorice tea doesn't taste like black licorice! It's real licorice root, so it's sweet. The closest thing I can compare it to is some sort of hot apple cinnamon liquid dessert.
You should find out why and solve the issue. Taking drugs, even Tums, every week and more can't be good for you.
