Wanting to get dreads for the first time, from what I've read I want to do it with the backcoming method, for the instant results and the lack of product.

Where possible I want to avoid wax, it seems to be the best way.

I was hoping to find a hairdressers that would backcomb my hair into dreads, as got no skilled friends to do it and I can burn a pot noodle. So if anyone can reccomend one near wakefield, please let me know.

I want to know if I'm right to do with backcombing as my first dreads.

I'm 21, Female, got shoulder length straight hair (wavy If I don't brush it good)

And also, whats a good maintenace routine for my baby dreads, and what shampoo / soap can I buy in the UK to clean them?

    Cheers Guys

Hello, you seem stressed.......... not what dreads are about.

First off read the stickies..... failing that any other first time post ever posted on here they all ask the same questions.

Avoid wax, it has no benefits i could scare you with a photo of myself using wax but im too lazy to go find it right now but either way avoid it like the plague.

Second, there is no such thing as an "instant result" when it comes to dreads, you will backcomb them in, they will fall out, but thats ok, its part of the process... also im not gonna lie, its gonna hurt like hell, getting my hair backcombed was the worst pain i ever went through, especially the temples.

Considering your a girl im going to go ahead and assume you know other girls, this is all you need, backcombing is not rocket science it takes patience, they know how to brush hair, thats all it is and going to a hairdressers wont give you dreads, if you can find one that will do them, they will try crochet them and make you come back every six weeks for maintenance. there are loads of videos online on how to section, use the bricklaying technique when sectioning, and take lots of drugs, if you get two or three people to do it, you may get it done in a few hours. (took me eight hours with one person).

As for the burning of the pot noodles issue..... buy them pizza....

Haha I am chilled, just want to do it right and not botch it up.

I am hopeless with stuff like this, really bad because I can't see without my glasses on, and trust me when I say I don't have anyone that would be able to help with this sort of thing.

I read that backcombing gives you the basic dread appearance once its done, obviousley it varies and gets tighter and looser as it goes, but you get better visible results sooner than with the neglect method, I know my dreads will be babies for the first year or more at least, especially with only having shoulder length hair.

I don't want to use wax, but I would appreciate a reccomendation for what products people do use that I can get in england? What shampoos / soap etc.

I Just wanted to know what method would be best for my hair type, and where I can get it done as I'm unable to get mates to do it.

I think I want to go for a combo twist/rip and backcomb, but I really don't think i'll be able to do it myself, anyone any ideas where I can get it done in yorks? Last thing I want to do is go to a hairdressers for dreads and them try and give me a "dread perm" :/

Does Pirhana in leeds do dreads?

Whoa, UK talk. It's, like, foreign. :p

No really... You CAN do this yourself. It's a bit challenging but it beats to hell going to a salon and paying a crap ton of money. Seriously try getting just one friend to do it or try yourself. It's not that bad once you get your hair sectioned off.

Cor blimey mate, i'm no bloody foreigner just from blighty is all our lass! ;-)

its just awkward, I have piss poor vision, poor enough that only one company makes contacts strong enough and they cost a bomb.

If I take my glasses off to do my hair I cannot see a damn thing, just blur.

Plus me and my OH are dog groomers in training, so the twisting and ripping makes my stomach crawl lol, it goes against all my instincts and makes me cringe lol

Can you reccommend a good video on youtube? I may just have to give it a go

i feel sorry for your sister ;) i live near weoley.. am in stirchley, next to bournville :)

i think if you put your mind to it, you could easily backcomb. get your OH to do the bits you cant reach. just grab chunks and comb it the wrong way..

failing that, t&r, but i dislike that method.
    soo.. neglect? :)

If you haven't already, have a look at this thread. It's perfectly possible to do yourself, you can't really do anything "wrong". I know these are twist 'n' rip, but it all comes down to the same thing really in terms of difficulty.

Backcombing gives you what is more commonly referred to as the basic sideshow bob appearance once it's done.

By the time it doesn't look silly, is just about the same time as neglect would look way better:daisy:

Got mine done in Yorkshire, they were back combed. I wouldn't recommend the method used as I overtime had to cut out all the backcombed length.
