So I have wanted dreadlocks for a while now but I am cautious at the same time. My hair is about 10" long, its dirty blonde, and straight. I got a perm to get it curly hoping it would look good but it has worn off and my hair is straight. My hair is also getting knots in it, mainly in the back. I called many salons and barber shops and most said they don't do them and they also told me that the dreadlocks I want are "impossible to look good on a Caucasian without looking like a bum". My question is does any one know of a way to get this type of hair. I will pretty much do anything to get it and if it is impossible then I will cut my hair to something else as it doesn't look good at the moment. http://www.hipforums.com/newforums/attachment.php?attachmentid=48086&stc=1&d=1325376919
Im also a newb, but Im pretty sure (through hours of research and internet trawling) that the hair in the picture will have been achieved through dread perming...or at least your hair would have to be dread permed to go like this. Specialist salons will do it....but whyyyyyyy? *expiration - one thing I have learned over the past few weeks, is if you have a *cautious attitude*, dreads probably aren't for you
Unless your hair is super curly, then it's not going to look like that dude when it locks up. Sorry. Dread perms are lame. You can still have locks, but not ones like those. And get used to idiot hair stylists and just people in general thinking false things about locks.
I don't think the hair in your picture is Caucasian at least not 100%. If you have straight hair now you won't be able to get them like that as they won't be curly and also with Caucasian hair you'll struggle to maintain and keep dreadlocks that thin.
okay well I'm kind of in the same situation you are so first, it is possible. I used shampoo/conditioner while i was in the shower, then twisted my hair while the shampoo was still in it, and DONT DRY it when you get out. it worked very well for me, i haven't used bee's wax or anything and my hair is already locking is most places. i would definitely try this to get started!
Yess, Thank you iamtigerpaw. What should I do first, what should I buy,can you post a few pictures of the process or type it out. I have looked at many but not all kinds of dreadlocks and I have found nothing close to the ones that I posted a picture of. In my opinion other dreads look dirty so I would like to make them look clean and neat, as much as possible. Currently I don't use conditioner so my hair is ready for locking, but I want to make sure it's perfect so what should I do to begin. Thank you everyone for your help and opinions in guiding me in the right direction.
okay, so basically, i used Garnier Fructis, there's a 2-1 in shampoo conditioner for like $4. These are your options from my experience, either you can wash you hair in the shower, and while the shampoo/conditioner is still in your hair start twisting it into your locks. when you get out of the shower you can't dry your hair you have to use the shampoo/conditioner as a glue to keep your hair together. i repeated this process several times throughout a week and it has been working well. my dreads aren't "clean" but thats because i don't want that look. if you do, all you have to do is find some sort of african hair shop, they know how to "lock" your dreads for the clean look.. i hope this is helpful to you! good luck, and just have faith that if you want to dread your hair you will find a way
Is This Post Some Kind Of Sick Joke..??? Everybody Knows That Conditioners Stop Tangles, And That Dreads Are Formed By The Hair Forming Tangles. If You Use Any Form Of Conditioner In Your Hair You WILL NEVER GET DREADS.... Don't Quit Your Day Job tigerpaw. Cheers Glen.
Your dreadlock plan is twisting your hair in the shower and then not drying the hair? sounds like a fool proof plan. Edit: Just noticed that you don't appear to have Caucasian hair anyway, so while twisting the hair might work for you, but when someone normally has completely straight hair it's a waste of time.
If you worried that much about how they are going to look, its going to drive you crazy. You have to let them mature to look good. Just gotta go for it and see what happens. If you cant deal with looking messy its not going to work.
Lol while everyone thinks that they're right... it's okay for her to give it a try.. it never hurt to be optimistic and even beyond that, it has worked for me. what's the worst that can happen, she tries it and it doesn't work? LAY OFF please. thanks
It's not a matter of what's the worst that can happen, it's that it will not work. Obviously the OP can choose to take advice from whomever they choose... people with experience or..... The problem with your shampoo idea is..... well the begin with having your hair all gunked up with soap is gross and nasty. You're going to have dried up soap flaking out all over the place and you will most likely end up with a very irritated scalp. The dreadlocks also will never properly form, you will just have lumps of hair all gunked together with soap. Dreadlocks take months to years to form, when your hair gets properly knotted up so it mats together to form the locks. If the hair is gunked up it stops the hair from being able to move and therefore actually stops the hairs from locking up. Another problem with the advice you are giving is (from the picture of you that you have posted multiple times in multiple threads) I am under the impression that you don't have naturally straight Caucasian hair. Simply twisting straight Caucasian, with or without shampoo will do nothing. As soon as the OP washes their hair again and washes out the shampoo it will go back to how it was to begin.
This. Srsly, read the READ THIS thread. Need to talk to skip to make me moderator so I can have a fiddle to make the FAQ stand out ><
