So my brother saw a video on his facebook of some TV show in America (reality), there was some picture on the screen and people sat around it. There was a black person in the picture and one of the guys said he didn't like him because he was black. There was a black person in the show, a few seats away from him who got extremely offended and reacted quite badly. Everyone else was also shocked. Now, we established (had a family debate) that, this person is racist because he is judging someone for the colour of their skin, but my brother said he doesn't see why the black person in the show should be offended. I said it is because he is judging him on the colour of skin, just an appearance, not a valid reason, and it is generalised. My brother said "it's just like saying you don't like people with tattoo's or piercings or dyed hair, and no one gets offended about that." I told him it's not the same because it is something they are born with, whereas a tattoo or piercing says something about someone's personality (even if it's not something to judge someone over), but judging a mass type of people over something they are born with is offensive, it's like saying you don't like disabled people, because it's something they are born with and has nothing to do with their personality or style or choice. He still said it was his own opinion and he wasn't saying "black people are bad etc" but he was just saying what he personally felt towards them. What do you think?!
I'm pretty sure thats the pure definition of racism. I mean, if disliking someone because of the color of their skin isn't racist, then what exactly IS racism? lol i wonder what would constitute racism in your brother's eyes..
i dont like your brother now, he sounds like a nice guy and all, its just that ... he's white, you know? what about that?
Personally I’d tell your brother to sit down and shut the fuck up before I kick his white ass halfway across the room Hotwater :afro:
Your brothers point doesn't make a damn bit of sense. Someone on tv said 'I don't like him because he's black.' and argued that wasn't a bias of race IE: Racism? That is the definition of racism. And not liking someone with tatoos is a bias against people with tatoos. There's just not a word for 'tatooism' becaus people with tatoos haven't been systamaticly opressed. I vote Hotwater knocks him across the room.
I can see your brother's point. Not liking something is different from finding something inferior. Would it be racist to say that I like Indian women most; and don't typically find Thai women attractive? I don't think Indian women are better than Thai women; I just like them more. Now, that being said; having seen the video, it was completely racist, as he's generalized many bad personality traits (that are seen in every race) onto blacks.
I thought I felt this way about Asians but I don't so I think sometimes people feel one way in the moment but it's not their real feeling maybe he needs to know some good blacks
I'm offended by people who don't like someone who doesn't like someone be auze they have tattoos, piercings, whacky hair And whatnot. It's a stupid reason not to like someone. Now if the black guy was acting like a dick and saying stupid shit, that's different.
Video aside, (it was totally fucking racist) I don't think that's a fair way of looking at it. Systematically disliking people because of their skin colour is racist, it doesn't matter if you think they're inferior or not. Besides, I find women of some ethnicities considerably more attractive than others, but that's not related to DISLIKING those of any, and in fact, there are clear outliers as far as physical attraction goes. But I would give all of them a fair shot, and never use race like that. Even if I find a particular colour of skin more attractive, it's not racist, because it's not a judgment of the person, just of my sexual attraction to that person. It's not a judgment on their abilities, character, behavior, or anything else.
I agree with Duck in a way about having a right to an opinion/preference though seeing the video it is completely racist and rude. This topic is really interesting, usually I am very black and white about things (hehe no pun intended) but there is a lot of grey area here. Keep sharing your opinions guys!
prejudicedism? after watching the video, that was so blatantly above and beyond racist that i have to assume he was trolling.
