Keep looking at all the sexy dreads! Ah! Just wait, brothers, sisters. You shall see a blondey with the dreadies soon! Hopefully by the time the ocala gathering starts they will be somewhat locked in. I seem to be having some progress although its only been a month since I quite shaving my head at a size 2 every week haha so DAMN do i have a long way compared to you guys. Sisters, I really hope to meet some of you sexy chickas with your dreadies, I cant remember a time in my life I ever been more attracted to a women with dreads. Something about the I JUST DONT GIVE A FUCK look haha. Well hopefully they will grow to be thick and long! I quit washing them about a month ago and now Im palm rolling all day long. Knotty, Nappy, Knarly
Good to see another start! Although I'd swap the washing and palm rolling bit around. Quit palm rolling about a month ago, and wash all day long (Well not all day, or even everyday - Just when you feel it needs one, just keep it clean).
would you mind posting a picture of them? i'd like to see your progress.. and on another thread there was this girl asking for advice on how to do her own dreads, but no one seemed to be able to help her
Well see, after i quit washing it I was just rinsing it out with water for a few days and even just that completely fucked my hair up and it was like pressing the reset button on my little dreadies. I know I havent been growing them out for that long so my hair isnt all that long yet but they are really starting to nap up and the only things that seems to help the process is serious palm rolling. So idk, i was just going to wait until my dreadies locked in completely before washing it, is that a bad idea? This may be a dumb question but do I really have to wash it to keep it clean? Its been well over a month now and it seems like my hair is staying pretty clean naturally. I just use a shower cap when showering. I wouldnt say it smells bad but im definitely starting to get a little hint of weed coming off them haha maybe even some male pheromones haha but its always a good thing to have those
Palm rolling is a waste of your time and I wouldn't recommend the not washing. Obviously you can do whatever you want with them but there isn't really a reason to not wash them, you want the hair to knot together not just get stuck together from it being dirty. Dreadlocks being dirty is just a myth. You shouldn't be disappointed that you're not seeing a lot happening yet and feel that what you are seeing is being undone by washing. Because you won't see a lot happening for quite a while anyway because you have such short hair and you're going the natural route I wouldn't be suprised if it took nearly a year before much started happening.
Haha well that would be why i posted this thread, BECAUSE I DONT KNOW WHAT IM DOING. Damn people treat you like an idiot sometimes when all you want is a few simple answers to clear up fact from fiction. Thank you for the input
Thank you Smelly D. You have answered many of my questions, and in a non asshole way. I appreciate that haha Oh one more question though, since this palm rolling method seems to work for me, would you recommend just sticking with that? I dont really know what other way id do it. The backcombing method just seems way to complicated haha
Man, my roots are a long as your hair! Honestly with hair that short, unless you got the right textured hair, I doubt anything is gonna really stick around, no matter what you do, until it reaches whatever it's ideal locking length is.
Hah damn thats whats up, cant wait till i get there. Yeah im starting them from a buzz cut of like 1, so compared to what it used to be its pretty long. But see thats the thing about my hair, it has its own weird kinda texture. When washed everyday short or long doesnt matter its just straight down. No body no nothing. But when i started palm rolling it was like it gave my hair a new type of texture haha. even after i rinsed it a few times it kept the crazy afro all hair sticking up look. So idk, its also kind hard to see in the picture but i have way more little twisties then are visible to the eye. Its a shitty picture. Plus i still have a few months to go before i start to see some REAL results hah
Haha wow, I must have completely skipped right over it. Thank you for the genuine response, the FAQ answered many if not all the questions i was asking haha i feel like a dumbass now Wow i just went and did some reading and it turns out I AM RIGHT. Not everyone has super nasty disgusting oily hair after not washing it. It even says that water alone is a common method for washing hair for those with hair thats no to greasy. "weaning your hair off of shampoo up until about 100 years ago, people didn't shampoo their hair daily and their hair didn't get greasy after missing one day of washing. why? because chemical shampoos strip the hair follicles of the natural oils that the scalp produces to protect the hair and scalp. when you strip these natural oils, the scalp aggressively produces more oil, causing more frequent washings. it's a cycle which continues until your hair gets greasy after 24 hours. washing your dreads (or even getting them wet) every few hours is impractical and can cause mold to grow inside. this is why acclimating your dreads to less frequent washing is imperative to a healthy head of locks. the easiest way to do this is simply gauge how long it takes for your scalp to get greasy after washing and wait a day or two before washing again. after a few days you will notice that it takes longer for your hair to get greasy again. eventually, you can go long periods of time (if you really want to) without washing your hair because it doesn't get greasy. also since you are not using harsh chemical shampoos, your hair doesn't produce oils as rapidly to keep up." I knew i wasnt completely wrong HAH Thank you Merrivale, your response believe it or not was most helpful. Good day to you sir!
I mean honestly I dont know that I have any more questions. It was a pretty brief but informative thread. But like it said, only time will tell so I guess i will just have to wait. Thanks for sharing!
No one said you couldn't wash your hair, what was said is that it is of no benefit for you not to. But hey it's also of no benefit to me whether you listen to anyone's advice anyway, there was one guy convinced he could start dreadlocks by rubbing in mayonnaise and honey and then not washing, while there is still someone just the other day who is trying to recommend leaving shampoo in your hair all the time.... People seem determined to use the advice they get from people who don't and have never had dreadlocks and simply have information they've gotten from a friend of a friend of a friend. People are free to choose what information they want to follow, so I'll add some for consideration. When I add my 2 cents it's generally because I actually have experience in the matter not because a friend of a friend told me he read something somewhere once. I have been long periods without washing my hair until I got to only washing my hair every other month or longer. In my experience it did not help my hair knot up it simply irritated my scalp and even though your hair and head get used to it if you itch or scratch your head at anytime while doing this, atleast in my case it becomes extremely uncomfortable and dandruff may become an issue...... and I don't know if anyone has told you but not washing your hair for a long time uuuusually doesn't smell all that great.... especially when the temperature goes up. I've also used pretty much every shampoo branded for dreadlock use along with quite a few which aren't and tried alot of the strange concoctions that come up here. But I've used just water for a long while and that way you avoid any of the shampoo evil chemical conspiracies that you often read here while also being able to scrub your scalp. Plus I find that drying my hair with the hair dryer and rubbing with the towel does far more than sitting palm rolling. Palm rolling is a con haha. Personally I use a shampoo now for cleaning my scalp. I use very little, infact the bottle of shampoo I have now has lasted almost a year. It's just what's working for me right now, if I run out of shampoo I can go back to just water but I wouldn't go back to not washing. Now feel free to not wash your hair but from my experience I can say that there aren't any benefits aside from not having to dry your hair. But since I have a longer beard than you do hair at the moment drying your hair shouldn't be a big deal yet lol.
You hair is not going to lock up when it's that short. You should just wash it like normal and never brush it. Palmrolling is pointless.
