Ok so apparently ive been doing it all wrong as many many people keep telling me. A good buddy of mine from south florida told me you just quit washing your hair and use the palm rolling method until your dreadies lock up. It seemed simple enough and has definitely shown progress but apparently not washing your hair is BAD for your dreads and makes the locking process much more difficult. I find that hard to believe but I never said i knew it all. Today ive been doing some reading trying to discover fact from fiction and it seems every site says the same thing. I guess i need to get some residue free shampoo/soap and some rubber bands. I slightly understand how the shampoo will help although im still a little confused but how the fuck are the rubberbands going to help and how would i go about putting them in correctly. Ive read online descriptions and cant seem to get a visual aid in my mind. Maybe im just retarded. Someone please explain to me why and how i need to use these rubber bands and do they need to be small, normal size, or gigantic haha And as faras the shampoo goes does it have to be shampoo or do they make residue free soap. Where can I find either one of these as I do not want to have to wait a week for them to come through the mail
christ almighty, where do you read this stuff?!! shampoo.. yes you need to wash your hair. not washing = oil build up. oil build up = lube for hairs = no knots = no dreads. therefore, shampoo = no grease = dreads rubber bands are pointless, especially with hair your length. they do nothing. they are good for separating the hair if you're backcombing, but theyre useless otherwise. rubber bands stop movement which stops knots, sooo, dont use them. washing.. wash when you need to. use whatever your scalp is happy with. i use chemical filled shampoo, some people use 'special' dread shampoo, some use just water, some use bicarb.. whatever. just wash your hair.
Yes you deffo have to wash your hair or it will get hard for your hair to dread up. Afterall it's still hair. Rubberbands are a no no. They'll leave grooves in your dreads so they'll look stupid. Plus they do nothing. Soap/shampoo, whatever, as long as it doesn't leave residue
Well the palm method and the not washing my hair was taught to me by a friend who is white and has had the best dreads on a white guys ive ever seen. He cut em all off and started over and is doing the same thing and his hair looks fine. Doesnt look dirty at all. As for me, i think i have abnormally super non greasy hair, even after a month of not washing my hair it seems pretty fucking dry considering all the oil people tell me is building up. I think dreads are different from person to person just as hair is. When i used to wash my hair every day when it was at a buzz cut i swear it had more grease and oil in it naturally just after one day of not washing it then my hair currently will ever have. I think that people have been led to believe that washing your hair every day is a natural thing. As everyone here should know, it is not. We are creatures of this earth and without society and new age ideas on what is and what isnt considered "healthy" or "clean" we would not have begun to wash out hair so much. I think, at least with me personally, i dont know about other, that the more i wash my hair, especially with bullshit shampoo with all the unneeded chemicals they put in it, the more oil it seems to produce. Like i said my hair used to be much more oily on a daily basis then it has been since i quit washing it. As for washing without shampoo, just using water, i think that might be my best bet. I was doing that at first to rinse off excess oil when i first started washing it but it was like the water kept pushing reset on my hair and it would lay down flat again completely or be at the point of an almost afro but no twisties. So i begin to used a shower cap and havent gotten my hair wet since and it seems to hold the twisties in much more securely. So idk i might try just rinsing it out with water, but i dont think im going to waste my money on expensive dread-specific shampoo that i would be forced to buy online. Honestly what i wanted to do was quit washing my hair altogether and just take "beach showers" and let the sand and salt water do its thing. Ive had serveral people say the beach does wonders for dreadlocks As far as the bands go, thank you for that haha I wasnt looking forward to putting those in my hair.
I agree with everyone whose said sea water is great for dreads. I recently came back from spain and went in the sea regularly and my dreads felt fucking amazing
Damn! I must get to the sea! haha ugh man i have such a ridiculously long journey ahead of me. Fuck! I wish i could just hitch a ride to florida with someone. Why dont any of you live in georgia?! Oh i know why, cause its shithole, thats why haha
Everyones head is different, so just figure out what works best for you. I've tried loads of shampoos and have also gone months just washing with water. Shit just needs friction to lock up, so no greasiness. I remember thinking the same thing about rubbernands when I first started out. Thank god for finding this place before creating a un-needed mess! You should try baking soda sometime. Supa cheap, and works great.
These website that you're reading, do they sell product? Hmmm I wonder why they'd advocate using products and putting rubberbands in your hair??? They want your money, don't be a fool!
You know i might just do that. That was going to be my second choice, next to water. Thanks for the input!
as others have been saying, dont trust the people trying to sell you there product, that goes for all walks of life, most of the time...... there con-ing you
