Why do we call some religions “mythologies” (ancient Greek, Norse, Egyptian, etc.) and others religions? Is this fair? What does this show about how relevant certain ideas are as society progresses?
I cannot answer your question, but another question to make you think is, Could god microwave a burrito so hot that not even he could eat it?
I think as "new religions" take over they disregard the older religions as myth. In their time the Greek, Norse, Egyptian were religions in their own right and those that we know about either absorbed still older beliefs, or ruled them as myth as they saw fit. I know the Norse religion took older gods (the Vanir) and set them as a separate kingdom, still gods and goddess' but not as all powerful as the AEsir. This is what I mean by absorbing. The Celts did this as well.....
Because some are just so silly they were obviously meant not to be taken seriously. Like Scientology!
Scientology isn't that far fetched. It's just douchebags like Tom Cruise that make it laughable. Considering Christianity is nothing more that reproduced literature from older mythology, I don't know why we can't call it Christian Mythology. It has giants, water walking characters, gods, devils, demons.. all the stuff that makes Greek and Norse to be categorised as myth.
There are way too many people around the parts I live that believe Sampson, Noah, and the garden of Eden are factual.
The guy who had his hair cut so he pushed over an entire building and killed 300 people? Yeah that's not mythical, hehehe
Kind of like the plane that toppled an entire building and killed 3000 people. Oh yeah, because someone parked some planes near some homies hood. Questions that make you think.
i think i'm going to wait for #2... christian mythology is a fairly common phrase. i personally prefer christianity because i don't like unnecessary syllables.
