This effectively bans the teaching of creationism as well as things like Holocaust denial... http://www.cisionwire.com/british-h...agreement-to-ban-creationist-schools,c9205737
About time. They've been teaching the completely ludicrous guess that is Creationism as if it's fact and hammering home the word THEORY whenever scientific explanations are suggested for too long.
Wow for real? I didn't know that the UK had still been teaching creationism. Or was it possibly something like it hadn't been taught for a long time (per most academic standards), but technically still legally could be, the law just wasn't on the books yet?
That's a great thing and all, but I can see where it could cause problems. I don't like the wording, and there are a lot of things in the scientific and historical communities that really aren't set in stone. Also; to give a more complete overview of the different viewpoints of different groups (no matter how extreme) puts history especially in a much better perspective. Though, I'm sure that can still be taught, in a very specific manner..
We were getting taught "RE" or "Religious Education" even when I was at school not more then 11 years ago. (it changed it's name a good few times "RS"=Religious studies" etc.) It's one of the reasons I got pissed of at school and did pretty much fuck all the whole time I was there, that and history, what was totally inaccurate and purely geared to make "THE ENGLISH" seam better then they were. Even the science taught when I was at school was a bit sketchy and very out of date.
they will still teach about religion in school, my sister does it atm in her last year of mandatory school (age 15-16). this ban has been made to sound more epic than it really is...
This refers specifically to schools set up by non-state entities, creationism is not part of the national curriculum. Religious schools can be set up within the state system and have been teaching all manner of bollocks. This means they can no longer teach creationism in the science classroom alongside actual knowledge. It can still be taught as myth alongside the other fairy stories in religious studies...
