Smelly D- I can think of something very anti-vegan to say, but I think I might feel morally conflicted if I do :p

that matted weasel business you're referring to in the last picture with the massive beaver tail is not something you really need to worry about. that prolly took him like 10 years to acquire. your hair is going to look very messy and unbrushed for a long time, but so long as you rip it apart as needed, it wont become one connected mass.
but yea, dreads are a commitment. if you just wanna try out the hair style, there are other ways to go about it like backcombing with wax, crocheting, or hair gel, but obviously that's not gonna get you much respect as it kinda makes a joke of what real dreads are

If you really want them; just try.
If you dont like the way you look; comb or cut.
If you can go the whole way; Good for you.

    Easy peasy.

Yeah. I actually did a test lock a month before I did my whole head. It's name is babylock and the rest of my hair was jealous of it.

I was thinking about doing one in the back of my head actually. I might do that.
But, man, I cannot tell you how many hours I spent as a little kid working out knots in my hair because I never would brush it. It's why I don't wanna do the rip and tear method, heh.

I need my sister's friend to help though. Geesh, I can't even braid my hair by myself... :(

Stop putting meaningless mental blocks and limits on yourself. Anyone can backcomb their own hair.

I actually can't braid my hair. Don't believe me if you don't want to, but it's not like I'm just saying that...

backcombing is not the same as braiding

i used to have to wet comb my curly locks every day otherwise they would matt and i'd end up with a grapefruit sized ball of severed hair when i did comb. imagine combing out nattys on a regular basis:banghead:
If you have very straight hair you may have to work towards them but for the curly haired it's a long and blissful, neglect holiday. drying mature locks in temperate climes=not so fun but not a pain.

sounds like you should just throw the comb away and keep hands off if you're prone to knotting. separating sensibly of course but then again you might be after neat locks which is near impossible with neglect(correct me if i'm wrong anyone!)

I'll assume you mean twist and rip... how would you feel if it were called twist and gently separate?:)

also assume you can't braid your hair by yourself WELL
Encouragement: you can do it! test lock sounds like a plan, i have no issue with hobo hair as long as it doesn't smell like it!

i started my dreads out with backcombing, rubber bands for 2 weeks and wax to keep them together and they are a year old next month and locking up really good

My hair is pretty straight. It's very.. obedient, almost, haha. It does what I want, so I feel like it wouldn't have a problem staying knotted. It's never frizzy, either.

I usually just brush my hair with those soft, bristly brushes. I'm probably going to go with backcombing, although the "twist and gently separate" does make it sound a lot nicer XD (sorry if I called it rip and tear, I was thinking of something else)

My hair won't be smelling bad. I'll continue to smell like my "potpourri" self :)

I'm probably not going to be using wax. That prevents them from locking up, right? What I plan on doing is on the very frizzy days if I'm going to school, I'll wear a bandana and tie them up. Otherwise I'll keep them down. I may just palm roll here and there, but I don't think I'll do it meticulously.

Do they really take that long to lock up? I want them to be normal dreads before July, so they'll be mature for all the ocean water I'll be submerging myself in when we go down the shore :D

they wont be fully locked up by july, but should be locked enough. sea water is good for dreadzors :) your dreads wont be 'mature' for a couple of years yet

locked enough for sea water to help for sure!
Whatagwan shmellyd? don't mean to threadjack... but this one's waiting for the peyote stitch. never got it if you sent it. [IMG]
By my understanding wax just sticks the hairs together preventing the friction/movement needed for them to entangle. turn possibility to certainty, please don't put wax in your hair!
wire wool would be like a locked dread, kinky and matted together, lots of meandering threads.
electrical wiring would be like a waxed dread, held together by the casing(wax). if you were to strip it(wash out the wax, which would probably take some doing!) the hairs would be loose. bit of a fucked up analogy but at least it doesn't involve fluffy weasels though i'm sure a waxed weasel would not be a very happy creature!

Bandana/ headband works well also keeps hair out of your face so you're not flicking fringe out of your face. activity also helps, sweat is salty too:) locks rubbing past each other in a tam/bandana helps them lock quicker. frisbee and headband was very effective for my natties. i never palm rolled, what's wrong with flatty natties? all of mine flattened because of sleeping and laying on them and they've rounded out now.

Ha! normal dreads.:) i once met a geezer who had very awesome dreads, asked him what he'd done to them and he replied that he'd worked on building sites for years. they were very polluted with concrete dust but that didn't stop them looking dreader. i didn't smell them though!

no such thing as a dread deadline sister, if they're locked by then it would be cool but if not the seawater will help them along the way!

Are you saying my fuzzy weasel analogy was bad? :p

My dad got me a really cool bandana- I'll probably wear it to school tuesday :D
My sister's friend is coming over in an hour or so to start dreading my hair. What she doesn't finish, I will... Hm... I need to figure out how think I want them

Well, it's good that sweat helps them, because I sweat a lot when at the gym :p
And, because of that, I won't bother doing the salt water mist.

Thinking that they will stay locked because you don't have unruly hair shows that you will end up with a new hairstyle (be it bald or locked) and a physics lesson.

Well, they're about one day old right now. I just washed them with baking soda.

    I really like them :)
My sister and her friend got tired of doing it towards the end, so they left me with three big ones at the top. I just ripped them into two today though, but I think they're still connected at the roots... no big deal. Although, some of them are a little thin, but they'll thicken up, I'm sure.

    :D

If they're connected at the roots they will congo after a while. I had that happen to me last set and ended up with four huge dreads in the back
