they don,t like when we rode dirtbikes on it, ive seen alot of it in my area on bikes have had knee surgies n don,t like long walks.
two pairs of boots--good startplus, wear two pairs of socks,a good hunting knife, a hatchet a water purifying kit and lots of energy bars,(etc.). enjoy mother nature. peace, paisley skye.
Do not bring any thing that you do not absolutely need. You will not need a hatchet but a good light knife is a good idea. You must decide if you are going to sleep in the shelters or bring your own lightweight tent or bivy sack. There are pros and cons to both. I would not bring 2 pairs of hiking boots, thats alot of extra weight and a good high quality broken in pair should make the length of the trail, but several pairs of high quality socks is a good idea. Try and mail yourself different supplies to be held for you at the trail towns you will pass through. Mailing yourself things you need such as food, clothes, and odds and ends to go with the changing seasons saves weight and room in your pack. For instance pack heavier clothes early in the trip, mail your summer clothes to where you think you will be when the weather starts to warm, and send your heavier things back. Water treatment of some kind is a must, a hand pump purifier is your best bet. This and at least 2 grand in cash available on a ATM card to feed yourself for the 5 or 6 months you will be hiking. I hope you have a great experience, and dont forget a nice light camera.
I had a bud who hiked it 1 1/2 times. He said he went through a pair of boots about every month, I think.
I have never hiked the whole trail yet, just a section so far, but I have done alot of hiking. I usually buy Merell hiking boots, these boots usually last me several years of daily use and would definitely last the six months it takes to hike the trail. If you dont think your shoes will make it then send another pair ahead of you. You may not think that extra boots would make a difference in weight but trust me, you dont want an ounce you dont need.
I just got back but I can tell ya, bring Lots of socks, and gold bond. it was my Only problem that I had. Working so much I have not had the time to publish pictures but i have some Phone pics from the Iphone. Just make sure you do those things, everything else is gravy. I personaly lsept off trail in a 2 man tent the whole time and I was doing it so much that people came with me to do it. Half the time I was out there I had people with me, 8-10 people. It was a blast , have fun !
