There is a lot of talk about this at the mo and was wondering where you all stand on it. As a liberal in Scotland I am totally for it. We do get a decent enough deal now as we are exempt from a lot of the Tory cuts (thats's not a spelling mistake!) from down south, which is only fair seeing as we didn't vote Tory!. Independence is the next logical step and the only way forward for Scotland. I Think Salmond proposed timing for the referendum is canny. 3 years to get a majority of people for it - he would have no chance if he were to hold it now, which of course is why Cameron is all for a speedy referendum. Autumn 2014 just after the Glasgow Commonwealth Games and after the 2014 World Cup and all the anti-English sentiment that goes with it!. FREEDOM!!!!!.
Well, it's a difficult one. I think the idea that it's JUST for the Scots to decide is wrong ... it was a voluntary union that both countries chose, voluntarily, to enter into back in the 18th century (when the Scottish economy had been crippled by the ill-fated Darrien venture ...) and the idea that the Scots should be able to hold the English, Welsh and Irish to the terms of the Union for as long as it suits them, and then choose to go their own way when they decide they've had enough of it, kinda feels wrong. You know ... it's kinda like having a mate who comes and joins you in the pub, happily drinks when other people are buying, and then gets up and leaves before it's his round. That having been said, once Scotland is a foreign country, I won't have to put up with all my colleagues nagging me because I never go abroad for my holidays, so I suppose it does have an upside ...
It is surprising that the Tories aren't really embracing the Independence idea as it would work in their favour. The Tories have lost Scotland, not that they were ever popular here anyway, they will always be a minority party but in England they are still a major force. An Independent Scotland would mean the dissapearance of about 40+ (safe) Labour seats in Westminster (no point in voting the SNP to go and sit in the Commons!), which of course makes it much easier for the Tories to get future majorities. Makes sense for them to cut their loses and increase their power down south. As far as I know the Queen will remain Head of State under an Independent Scotland, Alex Salmons has claimed that her title is actually 'Elizabeth Queen of Scots'!. It would just mean Scottish people deciding on Scottish issues instead of Tory governments that they didn't vote for!.
This debate has been going on for years , Scotland has its own goverment , so why not complete independance .
So long as it's complete independance then why not? Scotland gets a chance to govern itself freely in the modern world (perhaps with a different, less nationalist party at the helm?) and the rest of the UK gets a reprieve on spending. Win-win realy.
i'm almost criminally under informed on this issue, therefore the only opinion i can offer is: please don't leave, our flag looks crap without the blue bits.
