For the last month or so, i have had severe nerve pain due to my diabetes, my doc has put me on 15mg of oxycodone every 6 hours as needed for pain. I have been taking them every 6 hours because the pain is fuckin terrible. when and if they finally fix my feet and the bad nerves in them, am i gonna have WD sypmtoms or will I be ok ? and thank you for this site, you guys have been awesome kind and welcoming.
WD depends on how much you take, how long you take it,and what you are taking,as well as what kinda stuff you are made of example,,does a cold keep you in bed for a week,,, or if you chop your leg off in an accident do you put a bandage on it and keep the leg for show and tell?Chances are taking Oxy at that dose you might have some discomfort for awhile if you were to quit now,but the longer you take it and the higher the dose gets, the worse the symptoms will be. My question as a peripheral neuropathy patient,is,what is the fix you are hoping for? I know its "possible" to reverse it if early in the game, but my doc told me once you've made it to the Oxy stage it most likely wont ever go away,it can be stopped from getting worse, but not go away.Just wanting to know if theres a new treatment you know about that I havent heard of yet, cause I agree, this shit hurts,BAD. Im taking 120mg Oxy,75mcg Fentanyl patches every 48 hrs and 1500mg Tramadol to keep it tamed these days.If you dont get "fixed",stay on as low a dose of meds as you possibly can for as long as you possibly can because its probably gonna be a loong ride.Best wishes and luck.
Thanks so much for the reply, My doc is trying Gabapenton with my oxy and was talking about tramadol as well. I honestly dont think its gonna get better but hope it will. I really had to beg this doc for a refill of oxy and now im thinking that i am going to have to go to a pain specialist. You having this, you know that a doc actually downplaying your pain is bullshit. The last week or so I have noticed that the 15mg is not doing what it used to and don't really know what i should do. Might have to start up the chainsaw. lol
Yeah,I was taking Gaba too in the beginning, but it didnt help enough to justify paying for it anymore so I dropped it.My dog has hip problems(boxer) and was presribed tramadol, same dose as me,but since insurance pays for mine and not hers,,I cant afford hers, so I've been giving mine to her for the last month or so(and yes its totally the same drug and dose before anybody clobbers me for doin this). Yes you will probably need to find a pain specialist at some point so now would be as good as any if you can afford it.You'll find tolerances to all this stuff grows extremely fast,so try to deal with it for as long as you possibly can because even a pain doc is gonna try to keep you as low as possible too,and eventually you'll be stuck where nothing works,so deal with the pain as long as you can before asking for a dose increase. If he recommends something over-the-counter to go with the scripts, try it,it cant hurt and it might actually help or keep you from getting worse at the least. I've been doing this for almost 3 years now,so,you got a long way to go if you're in the first month,,keep the chainsaw in the garage for now, part of this is gonna be mental too,,if you let it get you down-it will.Find some way to distract yourself or relax your mind when you hurt until you just gotta dose, distract yourself from thinking its always getting worse etc.I dont know how to put that kind of stuff in writing,,,but hopefully you know what I mean.If you let pain rule you,,it will. Places like this and chats are a great help to me,specially on bad days.
Your doctor will know that you have built a tolerance by that point and will wean you slowly off of the pills so that you do not go through w/d. Just be careful not to take more than prescribed so you keep any tolerance development to a minimum. Good luck on your surgery.
I forgot,I was on Methadone for a looong time, and it worked really good for neurapathy pain.Im on Fentanyl just long enough to hopefully drop my tolerance and go back to it.Makes a good all day med with Oxy for breakthrough pain.Might look into that if your pain doc prescribes it when you find one.I only took 10mg 3 times a day for at least a year on Methadone.
As others have said, it depends highly on how long you have been taking it and what your past opiate use looks like, and how fast you see, to gain a tolerance. 60mg of Oxycodone isn't very much at al, especially if split into 4 15mg doses throughout 24 hours. That is a very odd dosing schedule, considering how extremely short the half-life of Oxycodone is (1.5 - 3 hours IIRC?) it should be dosed every 4 hours at the latest for the most effective management of pain. I doubt you will have any serious WD's....nothing that I would go get on Methadone or Suboxone for. Also, don't assume after these medical procedures are done that you will be pain-free. Do you find yourself or see yourself becoming dependent, physically or mentally, with Oxycodone? Be honest with yourself, because that is the one thing you really need to watch out for....if you start noticing these feelings, I would personally try and taper myself down before you get in too deep, trust me. A LOT of people become addicted to opiates because of medical procedures that require hospitalization. Methadone can be a blessing for some, and HELL for others. It's a weird drug, in that when in MMT, you dose once a day, every 24 hours at the clinic, and when in Pain Management, you dose frequently, throughout the day. I never understood re-dosing with Methadone, because it has a very very veryyyyyyyy long half-life, and can work for 24 hours at least, especially once you have been taking it a while and it gets into your system good. I personally only use my prescribed Methadone when I run out of my Oxycodone or Hydromorphone, and even still I don't really find that it helps much. Plus, the WD's for 'done are fucking INTENSE and last FOREVER. I would never want to try getting off Methadone after long term use, that scares the fuck out of me after the horror I've seen watching my brother cold turkey from Methadone.
I've heard that the wd's for Methadone can last for weeks. I only took it once. I had run out of my vikes and a guy gave me one. I don't even remember the dosage, but I remember it was in effect for at least 12 hours, so it was a big help. As for diabetic neuropathy, I take 1200mg of Gabapentin per day, and it has reduced my pain from that quite a bit. I haven't heard of any treatments for diabetic neuropathy other than medication, and maintaining proper blood sugar levels to try to keep it from getting any worse. But believe me, I know how bad that pain can get. Before the Gabapentin it was getting intense. Different kinds of pain too. Right out of nowhere I would get a cutting sensation in a foot, like being sliced with a scalpel, or maybe shooting, "electric storm" spells that would come and go, and even numbness at the same time. That's kind of hard to explain to a doctor. I have problems with ingrown big toenails and fungus, and when I see my podiatrist, he'll basically remove 90% of my big toenails, and those toes are so numb I barely feel it.
You guys are awesome, this site is a godsend. I am watching my oxy intake and I actually went 18 hours and skipped 2 doses just to see if I could. No wd symptoms other than pain that is normal without treatment. So i did just take a 15mg oxy to relieve that. Its just scary to see what some of you guys are going through and I want to keep aware and take all the advice you guys give me. At this time I do feel much better than I did though, but that is normal with 15mg oxy. How much oxy every 4 hours did you guys take ? and was it prescribed that way ? Its amazing how this doc makes you feel like a criminal when you talk about painkillers. I wish I had an answer on how to go without the pain so I didnt have to worry about the painkillers. But think I deserve to go without most of the pain in my feet by taking a painkiller also. Nobody should have to go without a painkiller because of a doc's negative attitude towards opiates. I hope this makes sense. Thanks again guys !!
Yeah,it really sucks when your doctor makes you feel like a crack-fiend trying to get a front on a rock or something.Pain docs are a little better, but not by much in my experience. But that could be a good thing too,,I cant imagine if I lucked into one of those doctors that ask YOU what you want and how many.If I found on of the easy ones I'd probably be dead in a couple of months lol.I take 2 30mg Oxys when I first get up and a 30 every 5 hours or so,but Im supposed to take em every 6 hours.I made a mistake in that first post here about 1500mg tramadol--it was supposed to be 150mg twice a dayGabapentin is supposed to be 1500mg a day.The Methadones are bad withdrawls if you quit taking them, but they do work great since theyre extended release, which is what you need to get,,a stronger extended release and then something else for breakthru pain. @happydude--I know what you mean about all those pains. Its embarassing sometimes when you get stabbed in public huh lol,I probably look retarded sometimes I bet. @Feelings--those withdrwals are bad,,thats why I keep several hundred as a stash,,so I dont have to cold turkey lol.My regular doctor gave me a migraine shot once that sent me stright into WD(Nubain I think),that was no fun,so thats something you have to watch out for.
