First Psilocybe cubensis Grow

:afro:I have just purchased my first Psilocybe cubensis from SporeWorks and bought the sporeworks choice syring special for 10.50 wondering what kind of strain I will get.


I also purchased pre-stralized jars so I have less of a chance of contamination bought 3 PF Tek Mushroom Cake Substrate Jars - half pint wide mouth , sterilized from Everthing Mushrooms for 22.50 with shipping to get thigs started.


Got perlite aswell from walmart today for 4 dollars.

I will post pictures as soon as I get my grow setup going and get my spores and jars.

I need advice from experinced growers.

My advice is to not waste your money buying pre sterilized jars.

You could have very easily made two dozen pf jars for the same price.

Construct a glove box and be mindful if you use alcohol inside of it... it doesn't take long for the vapors to build up and then when your spark a lighter.... vroooofffffff..... have blown up several boxes and singed my arm hair on several occasions

Get latex gloves and make up a spray bottle of 10% bleach solution to sterilize your work area.

Get a torch lighter which make it much easier and faster to flam sterilize your needle between jars.


Also have patience when it comes your jars..... most rookie mess up by checking on them every few hours and fretting about every little thing. My advice is once you innoculate your jars put them in a dark warm place and don't look at them for a week.

 

The only reson I bought pre sterilzed jars was to hopfully prevent any contams and beacuse I dont have a pressure cooker either. But I will be workin on my glovebox today so I can be ready to get this going as soon as I get the spores and jars.

Also Grain, I was wondering if you have every bought from sporeworks and if you have ever bought the special and If you find out what strain it is once u get it or do I have to wait for it to grow and do some lookin around to find out.

I also would like to know if a glove box is needed since thease jars will be strile. And the Jar website says I have to puncture the holes myself, can I do this without contamination easy?

Yes you can poke the holes yourself just be sure to cover the holes with unopened tape or tinfoil.

They will tell you what strain it is when you receive the syringe. Chances are it will be one of the more popular strains that they made a ton of syringes of but didn't sell them all yet and are trying to unload them before they get too old. I would guess youll end up with a B+, Gulf Coast, PF Classic or a Golden Teacher.

I have never purchased spores but know the guy that owns sporeworks and he is a good guy.... and the company has a good reputation.

The greatest thing about growing mushrooms is that when you get your first flush you can make a bunch of spore prints and then trade them with other growers for different strains so if you play your cards right these could be the last spores you will ever have to buy.

When you go to poke holes in your jar lids I would recommend using a power drill with a small bit (the bit should be just alittle bit bigger then your syringe needled). Sterilized the drill bit with rubbing alcohol first and drill very slowly... this will give you a nice neat hole and you won't risk driving the nail/bit to deep and introducing contamination to your substrate.

 

Wow, Sorry yall I didnt think anyone else was going to post on here but since yall did I guess Ill let you guys know how its going.

Recevied my spores about 2 weeks ago aswell as the pre-sterlized jars innoculated that day.
I will admit to my first problem and that was being way too high while doing it and thought only one hole would be fine and inject 1cc in that hole. After waiting for 5 days and seeing the myclium growth made me think I should make 3 more inculation holes in each of the jars.

I injected .25cc in each hole(I know I wasted alot of spores) but thats how ya learn from your mistakes.

Now the jars have 3 jars without any contamination(knocks on wood) and I really don't know what to expect So I am super fucken happy that they have all been makin myclium.

This is the only PF Classic jar and her name is Slow Bitch.

 

That seems like kind of a pain to have to put the holes in yourself...but maybe that's not a big deal.
I like that idea of using a drill. If you hammered them I'd think you'd have to take the lid off or it would smash the jar. Be careful not to mess up the vermiculite on top...it needs to stay dry and not mixed with the stuff below it to work right I think.

 

Thank you for the tips. ya I thought that it was a little wierd selling jars labled PF Tek Mushroom Cake Substrate jars and they dont put holes in the lid.

What I did to make the holes was to let this thumbtack sit in Isopropyl rubbing alchohol over night and a nail over night, flame starlized the tip of the thumbtack and periced the lid and made used the nail to make the hole a little bigger so I could fit the syringe in there.

Told ya sporeworks is a good place to get your spores.

I am currently working on a new strain of Pan cyan that I hope will be on sale there and ralphster in a year or so. I am trying to breed a strain that is more tolerant of elevated levels of CO2 so they are easier to grow (pan cyans overlay like crazy if you don't exchange their air numerous times a day making them harder to grow)

 

Damn, I have been readin up a bit on Pan cyans mostly cause they are 4x more potent I would love to try your new strain once avaliable to the public:sultan:.


Im only posting one picture today and its of the one I marked with sharpie on outside of the jar, It fucken exploded overnight with growth and started growin myclium on the bottom of the jar.:2thumbsup: Im excieted.

congratulations! You should be tripping in about 1 week and a half!

 

Looks like its ready to be dumped....don't wait too long. And realize you're not going to get much from 3 of those little jars. Only enough for one trip I'd say.

 

1 trip from 3 jars? :rofl: dont listen to him. Those jars I would say have about 2 to maybe 3 flushes. Each flush on a jar I would estimate 2 - 4 grams. And if the are cubes then that should be 2-3 trips per flush.

 

I use full size mason jars and usually get around 20g (dried) out of 8 jars. I'm only speaking from personal experience....you may know some trick that I don't, but I've never been able to yield that much. And I know I have a high tolerance but I've grown both of those strains and have found them to be particularily weak. I had to eat more than a 1/4 oz of Costa Rica to get where I wanted to be.

If there are ways to get a better yield I would love to know how. I'll do more research when I get a chance

theres only 2 jars now and I'm planning on waiting another 5 more days untill I dunk and roll them.

BUT I have read on shroomery several times that you can let your jar consolidated for up to a month and it have a signifagaint change in potency the 1st and 2nd flush So If your not having good potency with your mushies try not dumping them as soon as it reachs 100%.

And if you are having smaller flushes you can try taking a sterile syringe filled with sterilized water and inject 10cc in your cake about 3-4 times a week this will noticble increase your yeild according to shroomery.

I know this being my first grow gives no reason to belive me cause I have never tried thouse techniques above but I have done my fair share of reserch befor starting this grow.:2thumbsup: So maybe just try them and see how they work out.

I think I should have enough to trip a couple times with a close friend.

Those are some crummy yields. If you aren"t putting down at least a pound dry per 12 full sized canning jars (grain jars spawned to manure and straw) tjen you are doing something wrong.
