ive cut everything with a face out of my diet. here is a debate though..
chicken eggs are only fertilized when a male "finishes" the job. so does this mean that the eggs we buy from the stores are okay for vegetarians to eat or not? idk because my dad and cousins swear up and down that store eggs arent considered meat and that it would be okay for me to eat them. im not sure though because that egg had the potential to be a baby chick. anyone and everyone comment and explain. do YOU eat eggs? whats your POV?

Unless you go to the ranch yourself and see the hens, it's pretty safe to assume the hens are treated like crap. Labels like "Free-range" and "Vegetarian-fed" are bullshit, and "organic" may mean they have a decent life, perhaps (or their lives could still be shitty), but not anything really worth living.
I don't eat eggs because I just don't feel comfortable eating them, I don't think they're healthy, and it just feels wrong. The smell grosses me out too.

My science teacher has three hens, though, and they live in an oasis (his garden is AMAZING!!). my aunt volunteers on a farm that has hens, and they live great lives too (never will be slaughtered!!!). Getting eggs from places like these is essential if you do eat eggs. It's nice to support local ranches, so scope one out. I would do the same, but as I said, I just don't feel right eating eggs.

You can go to localharvest.org to find a ranch :)

    Good luck!

You can buy *fertilized eggs* from your local yuppie market for 3x the price of regular eggs.

There's a kind of standardised vegetarian diet referred to as lacto-ovo which allows for the consumption of eggs and dairy.

I don't find these diet rulebooks to be necessarily the best thing for me. I LOVE fish and I feel good about eating them, so I'm not a veg... I just eat

It depends on why you are on a veg*n journey.
    Are you only against killing?
Are you against industrial ag? ( and if so, look at how the plants are raised, too)
Do you believe or think that animals have the exact same rights for treatment as humans in the West?
Are you looking to improve your own health?
Does your faith/ ethical worldview disallow flesh?

If you are asking about animal treatment, dairy comes from recently delivered mother cows. About 50 percent of calves are male.
Cattle raised for milk are not raised for meat (long history of selecting for end product), somewhat happens to the males? Veal. Some as milk veal, the calves kept in crates.

I have access to goat cheese. I have been to the farm. I am ok with how the animals are treated, although the males go to the halal meat stream.
I'm a tiny percentage of consumers, for knowing the source that well.
Occasionally, I can afford the cheese. Very occasionally.

One thing to be aware of is free range eggs sold by raisers who don't seems to have a lot of hens.
About 16 years ago, I was all happy about "ethical eggs."
I bought eggs form them at a roadside stand for a couple years.
One night, working late shift at the paper, I wrote up the cop beat.
Guess who had gotten busted for cockfighting?
    Yep. My egg people.

Be careful with eggs, milk, butter, and cheese.
Whole eggs are almost 60% calories from fat. Whole milk almost 50% fat. Butter almost 100% fat. Most cheese is 60-80% fat.

I don't eat any dairy products either. They're pretty much the same as eggs- if you don't see how the animals are raised, then it's probably not a good lifestyle!
When I went vegan, it kinda just happened. All animal products just didn't sit right with me (I had been lacto-ovo vegetarian for 1 1/2 years). I began cutting down on all animal products... everything just began to repulse me (well, except for yogurt, which was cut out easily, too)

    Hope this helps :bobby:

It really has little to nothing to do with my health. I'm quite fit. I just don't agree with some of the ways that our meat is "harvested". As for dairy products... I have no way of knowing where the eggs in my house come from so Ill go ahead and leave them out of my diet. Ill look more into the milk thing. I might have to scratch That too. I Just don't want Do be in this for the wrong reasons. Thanks For the advice!!:)

Eggs are awesome. They're versatile and healthy in moderation (great sources of protein, vits and minerals) and female hens lay the things regularly no matter what humans or cockerels are doing. The majority of eggs sold are not fertilised.

There are plenty of farms or country stores where you can see the hens in question, too. Some people even have them in their gardens and sell the spare eggs.

I went years without eggs in the name of ethics and it was utterly pointless.

I am a vegetarian for a number of reasons. But my first motivation was my problems with factory farms/ranches. For this reason eggs and milk aren't much better than meat. However, at this point I am raising chickens and feel perfectly fine about consuming their non-fertilized eggs. I feel connected to the food source. Plus, Fingermouse has it right eggs are quite nutritious. The whites are one of the most perfect sources of protein there is. If you want to minimize fat and cholesterol you can forgo the yokes.

What is the farmers market or farm stand scene like near you? Likely someone local-ish is raising chickens, maybe for chicks at Easter and for the backyard/small farm market.

If you'll pm me your area of Mississippi, I'll do some google fu.
Just remind me of the offer!

And it is never too early to be conscious of your health and body in relation to food. Head starts on aging and degenerative disease can be a major difference between living in your own place or a nursing home down the line.

They never had even half the potential to be a chicken, in fact.

Or, by your logic, everything has potential for anything. Your vegan bread has the potential to be a chicken, if a chicken eats it.

What I'm saying is, stop being silly. There's not hurting animals, and then there's crazy. They don't have to go together. And I'm not telling you to eat eggs, don't eat anything you don't want to eat, just don't grasp at pathetic excuses for it.

Vegans don't eat eggs. Vegetarians can eat them. Take into thought that it is an animal product and that you are eating a baby chicken basically.

No, no, note egg if unfertilized, equates to uterine lining/placenta, but not a close analogy.
