Hi, i like these bands, and i get confused as to if its metal or not. Most music i know is indie-ish, and i dont know much about the different types of metal. what type or genre would be these bands (i think metal or something metal): disturbed, metallica, slayer, pantera, iron maiden, and godsmack?
Disturbed = Modern hard rock I suppose. Definitely not metal. Metallica = First four albums are thrash metal. Depending on who you ask, the Black Album is either metal or "sellout rock." I'll go with the former though. The rest is more hard rock than anything with the possible exception of Death Magnetic which is in between. Slayer = Thrash Metal Pantera = Started off as one of the heavier glam metal bands in the 80's, evolved into what is known as groove metal by Cowboys From Hell. Iron Maiden = Traditional metal Godsmack = See Disturbed Hope this helps
Disturbed is definitely metal, specially cuz theyre metal influenced, and pantera is a little more thrash then they are groove metal lol. And slayer may be the epitome of thrash, but really they are closer to the death metal side of it, just with different vocals. And u can go to hell if u think metallica sold out, they fucking evovled, and now they are immortalized because of it.
Those bands are definitely more mainstream, something you would hear on the radio. By the way, disturbed is definitely NOT METAL. Metallica is metal by the early 80's standard maybe, but honestly when you put them up against bands like Pantera or any metal of modern times and they are blown away. They may not be sellouts but they are definitely overrated, vapid, cookie cutter "metal" serving up the same old platitudes. If you want some real metal, some brutal shit....Nile, The Contortionist, Veil of Maya, White Chapel, Behemoth, Gorgoroth, Meshuggah, Necrophagist.....that's fucking metal.
80's standards? If it's metal, it's always be gonna be metal. Time doesn't change a thing and I wouldn't say a band like Veil of Maya or White Chapel is more metal than an old "80's band" like Venom just because it's more "modern."
Good point. But I was talking specifically about Metallica. Just my opinion by the way. I myself am a musician and I mean no disrespect to the greats of the past, but music progresses over time. Metallica simply isn't as brutal as the metal of today.
The metal of today is very, very diverse. Some of it is not brutal at all (no harm in that btw ) and could easily be challenged in that department by modern Metallica (which I personally do not enjoy at all, on the contrary with their 80's stuff.).
Not only is the metal diverse, music itself is. It's getting harder to tell where to draw the genre lines which makes it more interesting.
