Have an upper limit of spending for food each week and stick to it.
Take packed lunches with more food than you will need for the day, just incase.
Have a "treat limit". For us it is 2 treats a month. Treats are anything which isn't essential food or clothing. So it can be a meal out, a day trip, movie, going swimming etc.
Make meals out of what you have in the house no matter what garbage it is. Some of your inventions will be revolutionary, like when we made mock chicken sandwiches with rice the other day.
Make sure you're getting all the best deals on food, gas, your bills etc.
Put your savings into a high interest account.
The majority of our clothes and furniture is second hand, too, from charity shops or online.

It takes making a commitment to do it and sticking with it. Basically in order to save you need to have a budget.

I have always put a percentage of my earnings into savings since I started working. That I do not touch unless it was already planned for.

Then I have a household account that covers all else, including an amount held in there for general emergencies.
