#F29 Shut Down the Corporations January 7th, 2012 · Ella · Announcements 24 comments National Call to Action Made by the Portland General Assembly – January 1st, 2012 Occupy Portland calls for a national day of non-violent direct action to reclaim our voices and challenge our society’s obsession with profit and greed by shutting down the corporations. We are rejecting a society that does not allow us control of our future. We will reclaim our ability to shape our world in a democratic, cooperative, just and sustainable direction. We call on the Occupy Movement and everyone seeking freedom and justice to join us in this day of action. There has been a theft by the 1% of our democratic ability to shape and form the society in which we live and our society is steered toward the destructive pursuit of consumption, profit and greed at the expense of all else. We call on people to target corporations that are part of the American Legislative Exchange Council which is a prime example of the way corporations buy off legislators and craft legislation that serves the interests of corporations and not people. They used it to create the anti-labor legislation in Wisconsin and the racist bill SB 1070 in Arizona among so many others. They use ALEC to spread these corporate laws around the country. In doing this we begin to recreate our democracy. In doing this we begin to create a society that is organized to meet human needs and sustain life. On February 29th, we will reclaim our future from the 1%. We will shut down the corporations and recreate our democracy. Join us! Leap into action! Reclaim our future! Shut down the corporations! *This call to action was issued by the Portland General Assembly on January 1st, 2012 with unanimous support. (Occupy Atlanta - Since hippybubba is near Atlanta) We won! Posted on February 6, 2012 by SaraA I don’t know if you heard, but Firedoglake, whose “Occupy Supply” program has been helping us keep warm all winter, ran a contest for “outstanding community activism” on the part of local Occupations. The prizes included five “command post” tents suitable for organizing in all weathers, and Livestream-ready laptops. And we won! Occupy Atlanta is among the five occupations awarded tents by the Firedoglake community: “The courage and determination of those who continue to maintain occupations after they have been raided is impressive. Occupy Atlanta came back even stronger after the raid on their encampment, and their foreclosure work continues to be a beacon of hope for the entire occupy movement. Every day we see occupy groups popping up in new cities around the world, as the movement works its way into the fabric of our global consciousness in a profound and transformational way.” People love to declare that Occupy is over. When our encampment was raided at the end of October, many people predicted that it would be the end of Occupy Atlanta. But if the events of the last three months have proven nothing else, it’s that we aren’t going anywhere. We are here to stay. Lt. Dan Choi will be coming in person to deliver our tent. Let’s show him a big Occupy Atlanta welcome! And go on from there. http://occupyatlanta.org/2012/02/06/we-won/#.TzRu6sXOXO8
(Occupy Atlanta) Occupy AT&T Tuesday, February 14, 2012 11:00 AM - 2:00 PM When: February 14th, 11:00 AM – 2:00 PM Where: AT&T, 675 West Peachtree St NW, Atlanta Why: AT&T has announced that they are laying off 740 workers in the SE region, directly impacting 95 Georgia families. This is despite the fact that they made record profits in 2011 and their CEO recieved over $27,000,000 in compensation. At a time when unemployment is at a record high in the state of Georgia, we can’t afford to lose one more job. We demand that AT&T stop these layoffs!! http://occupyatlanta.org/events/event/occupy-att-2/#.TzRvdMXOXO8
In my neck of the woods I would have to agree, I dont think Occupy made a loud enough point, I did a project on it for school, and people just seemed to be un-interested. Not to mention ive had several people tell me that they just dont get what we are protesting against. Im not saying the people of Occupy arent doing a good job, but we still need to work at it alot harder.
i support the occupy movement 110% but it seems that most of the supporters have just faded away. the foreclosures are really not what i signed up for correct me if i'm wrong but one of the homes in atlanta was a cops house one was one where the owner took a second mortgage for $300000 on a home worth $130000. don't get me wrong banks are part of the problem they gave loans to people who they knew couldn't afford the payments but if you make $40000 a year you can't make a $1200 a month note you should know that. now at&t i guess all of us should get rid of our iphones too. apple has 20000 people employed in america and over 300000 in other places. i think the outsourcing of jobs is the real crime. with a 9% unemployment maybe we should protest companies that outsource most of the jobs.
Warm weather arrives, increasing participation. Local groups shift their focus to daytime activities, or they die.
Iv been going to the GA's this winter. Just keep going, it will pick up again in the spring. Theres also been a series of Occupy Education lectures That have been interesting.
I was pretty excited about the Get Money Out movement. It picked up steam really quickly but stalled because 98% of the population refuse to be activists in any form. Things have to get really bad before real change comes. If liiiiike 10% of people get off their ass and try to make things happen the ball would really get moving.
The Occupy movement is really in its infancy and is still defining exactly what it stands for. Things are complicated by the global nature of the movement with slightly different influences in each city/country. As such it is natural that there will be ebbs and flows, ups and downs within the movement and its influence. It'll pick up again, and die away again also, and each time its goal will become more strongly defined until it becomes a very powerful movement indeed.
People can't be expected to pitch tents and live in parks in the middle of winter, however mild the winter has been. Come springtime things will really take off.
